JOB SUMMARYThe Deputy Marshal supports the City of San Marcos by enforcing municipal ordinances and state laws, ensuring public safety in city facilities and parks, and executing court orders issued by the San Marcos Municipal Court of Record. This position plays a key role in warrant enforcement, community engagement, and maintaining a safe environment through proactive patrol and law enforcement activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
- Patrols city parks, facilities, and surrounding areas by foot, vehicle, kayak, or ATV to ensure public safety and compliance with laws.
- Enforces city ordinances and state laws through verbal warnings, citations, and arrests.
- Regulates parking and traffic using signage, barriers, and enforcement tools.
- Serves legal documents, including summonses and subpoenas issued by the court.
- Participates in warrant enforcement activities, including locating and arresting wanted individuals.
- Coordinates with internal departments and external agencies during special events and emergencies.
- Provides security during court proceedings as needed to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
- Maintains accurate records and prepares reports on enforcement activities and case outcomes.
- Attends required training and meetings to maintain certifications and operational readiness.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Certification as a Texas Peace Officer (TCOLE).
- Minimum three (3) years of law enforcement experience.
- Swimming ability required, with swift water training, to be completed within one year of employment.
- Completion of ATV Safety Institute course within 12 months of hire.
- Successful completion of the department Field Training Program within six months.
- Completion of Court Security Training (TCOLE-approved) within one (1) year of employment.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Experience in municipal law enforcement or court security.
- Familiarity with warrant enforcement procedures and community policing strategies.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Knowledge of state laws, municipal codes, and court procedures.
- Ability to analyze situations and determine appropriate enforcement actions.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with the public and other agencies.
- Proficiency in using law enforcement equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-stress situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally. Frequent physical activities include standing, walking, and handling. Occasional activities include sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, fine dexterity, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, and using foot controls. Running may also be required in certain situations. The role demands constant use of vision, hearing, and verbal communication.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings, including city parks, facilities, and courtrooms. The position involves exposure to extreme weather conditions, infectious diseases, and potentially hostile or violent individuals. This is a safety-sensitive position.
