    Description

    Basic Function

    Under moderate supervision, welds, fabricates, and repairs a variety of metal parts, vehicles, and facilities/support equipment.
    Recruitment Timelines: Written e xams are projected to be scheduled for the week of January 5, 2026. Interviews are projected to be scheduled for the week of January 19, 2026 . Performance exam will take place starting the week of February 2 , 2026. These dates are subject to change .     Examples of Duties

    • Uses a variety of hand tools, machines, and welding equipment to repair and fabricate items of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals
    • Utilizes engineering drawings and blueprints and develops shop drawings
    • Prepares layouts and manufactures patterns
    • Fabricates tools, jigs, and fixtures
    • Maintains tools and equipment
    • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out


    Minimum Qualifications

    A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

    Education
    • Graduation from an accredited welding trade school
    Experience
    • Two years of relevant experience performing journey-level work as a combination welder (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW and GAS Oxy-acetylene)
    • One Year of employment in an active welder apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience
    Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements:
    • Valid California Clas C Driver's License
    • Must provide own tools of the trade
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required


    Essential Knowledge

    Knowledge

    • Metals, methods, tools, equipment, materials, safety procedures, and efficient operating practices used in MIG, TIG, ARC, and oxyacetylene welding
    • Vehicle operations and safety
    • Fabrication techniques
    • Shop math

    Abilites

    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
    • Communicate effectively with others
    • Operate MIG, TIG, ARC, and oxyacetylene welding equipment
    • Fabricate parts
    • Read, understand, and apply blueprints, diagrams and specifications
    • Weld ferrous and non-ferrous alloys and stainless steel
    • Design tools and equipment
    • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English
