    Salary Scale: $105,000-$110,000 (Dependent upon qualifications)

    Position:

    The Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Materials Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor.

    The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering and have research interests in materials engineering and manufacturing.

    In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online and will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field, with an official diploma at the time of employment from an accredited institution.
    • College or University-level teaching experience, in-person and/or online, in areas such as materials characterization, mechanical behavior of materials, non-destructive evaluation, fundamentals of MEMS fabrication, composite materials, corrosion, thin film technology, failure analysis and phase transformations, nanomaterials and nanotechnology.
    • Evidence of continuing research in materials engineering (in the areas listed above), for example, presentations at conferences, publications of peer-reviewed articles, and development of research proposals for external funding.
    • Experience involving the operation of materials characterization equipment and/or the operation and maintenance of materials laboratory equipment, for example, FESEM/SEM, EDAX/EBSD, EDS, XRD, AFM, and microscopy.
    • Experience advising, supervising, mentoring, and/or working effectively with undergraduate and graduate students.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Interest in and knowledge of the MSEM department and CSUN, including a clear vision of how the candidate plans to contribute industrial or practical experience with materials engineering that will enhance the Materials Engineering Master’s program.
    • Experience researching or teaching in manufacturing and related fields.
    • Taught a course independently at the College/University level in any of the areas listed above in the Required Qualifications section.
    • Experience in recruiting students and growing enrollment and programs.
    • Experience in allocating and managing resources, supervising research assistants/lab technicians, and/or staff.
    • Industrial or practical experience with materials engineering or similar areas.
    • Experience with assessment processes and accreditation systems, such as ABET.
    • Strong communication skills (e.g., through a well-written and well-organized cover letter, teaching, and research statement).
    • Evidence of effective engagement OR potential to engage with a diverse student body.
    • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
    • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment.
    • Research/Lab experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring.

    • describe the experience of recruiting students and growing enrollment and programs, including measurable outcomes and specific initiatives they have implemented or supported.
    • Experience in allocating and managing resources, supervising research assistants/lab technicians, and/or staff.
    • A current curriculum vitae (including courses taught, published research, and internal and external funding obtained).
    • A research statement (maximum 3 pages) including a description of current research projects and activities, the involvement of students in those projects, as well as future research directions, and also plans to apply for funding to support their projects.
    • A teaching statement (maximum 3 pages) describing their teaching philosophy, prior teaching experiences, and courses taught, as well as plans and strategies to be successful in teaching at CSUN with a diverse student population.
    • Teaching evaluations (for courses taught independently); in case of co-teaching, being a lab instructor/assistant or a teaching assistant who delivered lectures or held discussion sessions, the applicant needs to submit a confirmation letter from their professor of reference or their supervisor describing their teaching effectiveness. Please limit your provided teaching evaluations for courses (co-)taught/supervised in the past three years, with provided evaluations for a maximum of six courses.
    • Names and contact information (including email addresses and phone numbers) of at least three references, who can address the candidate’s teaching, research, and service.
