The Position
Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by federal and State safety and health laws and regulations. Incumbents identify or train others to identify safety and health hazards and violations, and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and industry applications using technical references and applicable codes and standards; prepare written reports and/or training materials; make public presentations to promote knowledge of safety issues among the public and industry groups; maintain current knowledge of new technologies, standards, codes, rules and regulations.
The Department of Business & Industry is recruiting to fill a Safety Specialist, Boiler position within the Division of Industrial Relations' Mechanical Compliance Section (MCS) in Reno. This position will report to the Boiler Safety Supervisor and will perform the following duties: promote recognized safety practices among businesses throughout Nevada covered by State and Federal safety and health laws and regulations; perform safety inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, and related equipment and prepare written reports using technical references and applicable codes and standards; investigate all accidents and complaints concerning boilers and related equipment which include interviewing complainants/witnesses, inspecting equipment, determining cause, and appropriate method of correction; and provide technical assistance in response to inquiries from designers, constructors, architects, owners, users, and service and repair organizations. Incumbents may be required to work shifts other than 7:00am to 4:00pm, to include nights/weekends and holidays. The chosen candidate will be required to use a state vehicle to conduct state business, so maintenance of a valid driver's license is required. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, occupational safety and health, construction management, or a closely related field and two years of experience in the design, construction, repair, or operation of high-pressure boilers and pressure vessels; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or trade school in engineering, occupational safety and health, construction management, or closely related field and three years of experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Safety Representative, Boiler - DIR in Nevada State service to include Commission as a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes For the Safety Supervisor and Safety Specialist, incumbents must obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Boiler Inspector's Certificate of Competency within twelve months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Positions may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
