The Position
Park Rangers (Commissioned) participate in operations, law enforcement, resource management, interpretation and maintenance activities at an assigned State park.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Position is in the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, Division of State Parks. Sand Harbor State Park at Lake Tahoe is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join the team as a commissioned Park Ranger 2. Located just 3 miles South of Incline Village, Nevada, as a Park Ranger, you will be working alongside dedicated staff and external agencies to manage the park's diverse natural and historical resources. From supervising seasonal team members to tackling fieldwork and administrative tasks, you'll be the driving force behind ensuring every visitor has a memorable experience. With over 1 million visitors annually, including a bustling summer season, get ready for an adventure-packed journey where no two days are alike. As a state park peace officer, you will be writing citations, handling accidents and incidents, resolving disputes, maintaining peace, and responding to emergencies. Law enforcement academy training will be provided to equip you for success. The schedule varies by season, so you will need to be flexible, working various hours and shifts, including holidays and weekends.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, education, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, history/folklore, wildlife management, museum management, park interpretation, business or public administration, criminal justice, or related field, and one year of professional park ranger experience in park operations and maintenance; OR one year of experience as a Park Ranger I (Commissioned) in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. Candidates may be required to submit to a background check and physical agility examination prior to appointment. Incumbents must complete a P.O.S.T. academy within 18 months of appointment. The physical agility exam consists of: a) Vertical jump of no less than 14 inches; b) The Illinois Agility Run in 19.5 seconds or less; c) complete not less than 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; d) complete not less than 23 consecutive push-ups; e) 300 meter run in 68 seconds or less; f) 1.5 mile run/walk in 16 minutes and 57 seconds or less; g) lift and carry a 70-90 pound bag of cement/sand from the ground and carry 10 feet to tailgate of a standard pick-up truck and then return, repeated three times; h) 100 yard swim in 5 minutes. Special Requirements Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Positions are subject to call back and must work various hours and/or shifts. Positions require statewide travel. Positions require work on evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. As part of the selection process, the Division of State Parks required: a) Physical agility exam; b) Comprehensive background investigation which will include urinalysis, polygraph and a psychological examination; c) Physical examination. The cost will be covered by the hiring agency. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
