    Major Duties

    PLEASE NOTE: The position will be filled at either the Student Services Professional SSP IA , SSP IB, or SSP II level, dependent upon the applicant's qualifications:

    SSP IA: The Outreach Counselor Trainee provides structured training in outreach, advising, and event coordination with the goal of advancing to SSP IB after 12 months. You’ll gain experience in recruitment services, admissions counseling, and APIDA student engagement while supporting key CSUN initiatives.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Serve as a member of the outreach team and must be prepared to represent the university to prospective students at all times
    • Promote CSUN programs through presentations, visits, meetings, in-services, etc., with high schools, local community colleges, and community partners
    • Assists in the understanding of the University’s admission and enrollment practices, serving as a resource for connecting prospective APIDA students with the university’s student support services and academic programs
    • Conduct in-person, email, phone, and webcast pre-admissions advising sessions for prospective APIDA students and their families
    • Assist in the implementation of all outreach events as needed, including, but not limited to, special campus recruitment and yield events, pre-admission, and campus tours

    SSP IB: The Outreach Counselor Assistant provides admissions counseling, outreach services, and event support to help increase APIDA student enrollment. You’ll advise students and families, promote CSUN programs at schools and community events, and contribute to recruitment efforts that strengthen the APIDA college pipeline.

    SSP II: The Outreach Counselor provides outreach, recruitment, and advising for APIDA students through presentations, admissions guidance, and event support. You’ll deliver pre-admissions advising, strengthen partnerships with schools and communities, and support CSUN initiatives to foster access, enrollment, and student success.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Serves as an outreach team member and must be prepared to represent the university to prospective APIDA students at all times.
    • Provides CSUN and CSU presentations to APIDA prospective students and visitors.
    • Provides guidance and assistance in understanding the University’s admission and enrollment practices, serving as a resource for connecting APIDA prospective students with the university’s student support services.
    • Conducts in-person, email, phone, and webcast pre-admissions advising sessions for prospective students.
    • Assists in implementing all outreach events as needed, including, but not limited to, special campus outreach events, CSUN Days at community colleges, yield receptions, pre-admission, and campus tours.

    Qualifications
    • SSP IA:
      • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
      • No experience required.
    • SSP IB:
      • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
      • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
      • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.
    • SSP II:
      • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field.
      • Equivalent to two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
      • A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
      • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • SSP IA:
      • Ability to effectively represent the university in diverse settings by demonstrating strong interpersonal, public speaking, and cultural competency skills. Knowledge of APIDA student experiences and higher education pathways, with the ability to deliver clear guidance on admissions, enrollment practices, and academic resources to prospective students and families.
      • Skill in providing accurate pre-admissions counseling and application support, including interpreting course equivalencies and articulation. Ability to build and maintain relationships with students, families, counselors, and community partners through consistent communication and outreach efforts, while utilizing tools such as TargetX to track engagement and follow-up.
      • Ability to deliver individualized and group pre-admissions advising across multiple formats (in-person, phone, email, and virtual platforms) with clarity and professionalism. Skill in engaging students and families in discussions about academic pathways, enrollment processes, and transition to university life.
      • Knowledge of CSU and CSUN admissions policies and the ability to support evaluation of educational credentials in alignment with institutional guidelines. Strong collaborative skills to work with campus departments on recruitment, yield, and matriculation efforts that enhance APIDA student engagement and success.
    • SSP IB:
      • Demonstrated knowledge of university admissions practices, enrollment procedures, and transfer articulation, with the ability to clearly explain requirements to diverse student populations. Strong skills in public speaking, advising, and presentation delivery to effectively promote programs and engage prospective APIDA students, families, and community partners.
      • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with prospective students, parents, school counselors, and community organizations through outreach, counseling, and ongoing communication. Skilled in problem-solving, referral to appropriate campus services, and use of CRM systems (TargetX) to track student engagement and support recruitment efforts.
      • Knowledge of pre-admissions advising practices with the ability to effectively counsel prospective students and families through multiple communication formats, including in-person, phone, email, and virtual platforms. Strong interpersonal skills to address questions, provide guidance, and encourage informed enrollment decisions.
      • Ability to evaluate academic records for compliance with CSU and CSUN admission policies, ensuring accuracy and adherence to guidelines. Skilled in collaborating with campus departments to support student transition, foster engagement, and strengthen recruitment and yield outcomes for APIDA student populations.
    • SSP II:
      • Comprehensive knowledge of CSU admission requirements, academic policies, financial aid processes, and degree pathways, with the ability to clearly interpret and explain this information to APIDA prospective students, families, and school counseling staff.
      • Strong organizational and communication skills to plan, implement, and assess outreach and recruitment activities, including domestic travel, presentations, advising, and community engagement. Ability to use CRM tools (TargetX) to maintain ongoing student relationships and support enrollment goals.
      • Ability to deliver accurate and personalized pre-admissions advising through multiple communication channels, demonstrating strong listening, counseling, and problem-solving skills to support prospective students in navigating the admissions process.
      • Knowledge of academic record evaluation and compliance with CSU and CSUN admissions policies, with the ability to collaborate effectively with admissions staff and campus departments to ensure smooth transition, matriculation, and engagement for incoming students.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
    • Classification: Student Services Professional IA, IB, or II / 3079/1 or 2 or 3082/1
    • The anticipated HIRING RATE for the SSP IA is $4150 per month. The salary range for this classification is: $4150 - $5076 per month.
    • The anticipated HIRING RATE for the SSP IB is $4482 per month. The salary range for this classification is: $4482 - $6342 per month.
    • The anticipated HIRING RATE for the SSP II is $5083 per month. The salary range for this classification is: $5083 - $7228 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends. May be required to travel (both air and land) with some overnights (Overnight may consist of anything between one day to three weeks)
    • This is a Temporary position; end date to be determined.
    • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
