*Subject to change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES The Houston Health Department is actively searching for several talented Clinic Assistants to perform the following functions: 1. Obtains and records height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure of patients
2. Collects and labels urine and blood samples. Performs simple tests or sends
specimens to laboratory for analysis. Maintains records of all transactions.
3. Prepares examination rooms for patient treatment and packages tools to sterilize equipment
4. Verifies patient medical history and maintains records on patient’s diseases,
operations, immunizations, and other pertinent information
5. Assists in various capacities: inventorying and ordering medical supplies, assists nurses and medical providers as directed, assists with follow-up of patients
6. Upon obtaining certification, administers medications to patients under the direct supervision or authorization of a physician or nurse practitioner
7. Perform front-end (registration) duties that include, but are not limited to, scheduling appointments, verifying demographic information, and conducting reminder calls.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or record boxes (up to 50 pounds) and/or very long periods of standing and walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate. Completion of a standardized program of medical education that provides training in medically assisting patients.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of related experience in a medical clinic, hospital or other health care facility are required. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Medical Assistant certification is required.
Completion of basic CPR certification required.
Medical Assistant and CPR certification must be maintained and current for continued employment.
PREFERENCES**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
• Completion of Medical Assistant coursework required
• Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred
• At least 2 years of related experience in a medical clinic, hospital or other health care facility is (required). Medical Assistant Certificate is less than 10 years old (required)
• Experience with EPIC (electronic medical documentation) system is preferred
• Medical Assistant Certification (required)
GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED Application review and/or interview. However, the Department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION Yes If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Pay Grade 9
SALARY INFORMATION GENERAL FUNDED POSITION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
