    The San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD) is piloting a 6-month, part-time, BLS ambulance program and is seeking up to 6 motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team! This opportunity is designed for individuals who are pursuing a career in the fire/EMS services and want to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment. As an EMT, you will work closely with our experienced staff to learn about fire department operations, emergency response procedures, and community engagement.

    THE DEPARTMEMT
    The San Rafael Fire Department is an all-risk fire agency with 69 highly trained operational firefighters providing services in firefighting, Advanced Life Support (ALS) response, ambulance transport, technical rescue, hazardous material response, disaster response, fire prevention, and community preparedness. We are dedicated to delivering the highest level of emergency service to our community-professional, compassionate, predictable, consistent, and sustainable.     IDEAL CANDIDATE

    The ideal candidate is a motivated and community-minded individual who is eager to learn and grow while supporting the San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD) in delivering high-quality Basic Life Support (BLS) services. Under the instruction and supervision of the EMS Battalion Chief, the ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a strong commitment to teamwork. They will embrace training opportunities, from classroom learning to hands-on field experience, and apply this knowledge to support emergency medical services and operations. With a valid EMT and CPR certification, the ideal candidate is dedicated to making a positive impact in the community while upholding the SRFD's values of respect, integrity, compassion, equality, and fairness.

    The mission of the EMT program within the San Rafael Fire Department is to support emergency operations by providing high-quality Basic Life Support services under the guidance of the EMS Battalion Chief. Through continuous training, field experience, and a commitment to professionalism, compassion, and teamwork, this role strengthens the department's ability to protect lives, promote safety, and serve the San Rafael community with integrity and care

    • Emergency Response Support: Provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level and provide support services to Firefighter/Paramedic crews at prolonged incidents including fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous materials incidents. Participate in drills and exercises to enhance your understanding of emergency response protocols.

    • Equipment and Vehicle Operation and Communication: identify and operate various types of equipment for life saving and support measures; safely and effectively drive ambulance unit to specific locations while in communication with dispatchers, treatment center personnel, and/or other emergency team members and internal/external personnel, in a respectful and collaborative manner. Consistently practice and promote safety for yourself, colleagues, patients, and the public in all aspects of emergency medical response and care.

    • Training Participation: Attend training sessions, workshops, and skill-building exercises to learn about emergency medicine and fire suppression techniques, search and rescue operations, medical aid procedures, and other essential firefighting skills.

    • Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance and inspection of firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus. Learn proper cleaning, care, and upkeep of vehicles, gear and tools to ensure readiness for emergency situations. Assist in the tracking, organizing, and dispensing of inventory.

    • Community Outreach: Participate in community events, educational programs, and public demonstrations to promote fire safety awareness and engage with the local community. Serve as an ambassador for the fire department and provide information about fire prevention and preparedness.

    • Administrative Support: Assist with administrative tasks such as record-keeping, data entry, and inventory management. Gain exposure to the behind-the-scenes operations of a fire department.

    • Physical Fitness: Work towards maintaining a level of physical fitness necessary for performing firefighting duties. Engage in physical training and conditioning activities as directed by the department.

    • Professional Development: Actively seek opportunities for learning and growth within the fire service. Take part in discussions with experienced firefighters to gain insights into career pathways and development strategies.


    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    • Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.

    • Must possess a valid EMT (EMT-1/EMT-B) Certificate either through the National Registry EMT or State of California. Must maintain local certification requirements.

    • Must possess a valid CPR "Healthcare Provider" card issued by the American Heart Association or equivalent.

    • Must possess, or within one month of appointment must obtain, anAmbulance Driver Certificate through the CA DMV.

    • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory record.

    • Physical fitness and ability to perform basic physical tasks, continuously move +/-25lbs, and lift up to 50lbs.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as adhere to the chain of command.

    • Bilingual language skills.


    DURATION

    This position is part of a 6-month pilot program. The exact duration may vary based on department needs and program performance. Successful candidates may not work more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.

    Benefits

    The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the working title of the Paraprofessional Temp position, which is a Part-Time position under the Temp/Seasonal Salary Resolution.EMT's will not work more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year, and a typical schedule is approximately 20 hours per week.

    Salary Range: $23.37 - $29.83 per hour DOQ/DOE

    In accordance with thesalary resolution, this position receives no benefits with the exception of Paid Sick Leave and a retirement plan.
    • Participation in a retirement plan is mandated by Federal Law, and employees will be enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS): PARS retirement: Employer contribution of 3.75% and employee contribution of 3.75%.
    • Sick Leave in accordance with California's Paid Sick Leave Law (AB 1522).


    Additionally, participants will gain:
