    Job Summary

    Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Career Education, the Career Counselor works independently to deliver high-quality career services and outreach to targeted students, alumni, and faculty. The incumbent provides individualized and group career counseling in both in-person and virtual settings, supporting students in their academic and professional development.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Provide individual and group career counseling, virtually and in-person, on topics including career exploration, transferable skills, resume preparation, professionalism, and networking
    • Design and deliver career development programs and workshops in collaboration with academic departments and employers
    • Serve as liaison to assigned colleges and departments, building strong relationships with faculty, student groups, and community partners
    • Facilitate classroom presentations and outreach activities to promote career readiness
    • Develop online resources, promotional materials, and tools to support student success
    • Supervise peer ambassadors, interns, or student assistants as needed


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Skilled in the development and use of virtual and on-line, distance-learning employment-related tools and resources
    • Knowledge of software applications: such as word processing, spreadsheet, power point and database management
    • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, career development, and counseling techniques
    • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
    • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
    • Possess excellent customer service and public relations skills and experience in effectively networking with faculty, staff, administrators, and employers strongly desired
    • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature
    • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling
    • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports
    • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and prepare statistical reports
    • Ability to develop and coordinate career/employment programs for students while interfacing effectively with faculty, deans and employers
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, employers and external agencies
    • Excellent team work, customer service, and public relations skills
    • Ability to function successfully in a detail-oriented environment, handle multiple work priorities, and manage projects


    Required Qualifications
    • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
    • Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s Degree in counseling psychology or a related field
    • Three (3) years of experience advising or counseling students in a higher education setting
    • Experience with program management, setting basic milestones, identifying resource needs, and team development
    • Three (3) years of experience in developing, implementing, and administrating in-person, hybrid, and live programs relevant to career development, counseling, or employment
    • Certified to administer and interpret career assessments (Strong, MBTI)


    Compensation

    Classification: Student Services Professional III
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,853/month
    CSU Salary Range: $5,540/month - $7,893/month

    The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required.
