    The Position

    DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

    This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future DPS Cadet positions for; Carson City, Reno, Battle Mountain, Beatty, Eureka, Fallon, Fernley, Lovelock, Hawthorne, Orovada, Pioche, Wells, Winnemucca, Yerington and Ely. Applicants who meet the qualifications will be emailed an invitation with additional testing information. Those who successfully complete all portions of the recruitment testing process will be placed on a list which will be used to fill current and future vacancies. Applicants must pass a written and physical fitness examination and demonstrate they have the ability to prepare to be a DPS Officer.

    Incumbents at this level are initially assigned to the Nevada P.O.S.T. academy where they are trained to perform law enforcement duties as well as other course work and physical training intended to provide the knowledge and skills to function as a DPS Officer. The instruction and training are provided in a formal classroom setting and in practical field exercises where Academy staff will review and evaluate each cadet's class participation, coursework, assignments, and written performance examinations. Successful completion of the training academy is mandatory for continued employment as a DPS Officer I; therefore, incumbents progress to the next level in the series upon successful completion of the law enforcement academy, meeting minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance and with the recommendation of the appointing authority.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. Incumbents must pass the Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment. Incumbents must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. DPS Officer Cadets and DPS Officer I's who either are unsuccessful in passing the Nevada P.O.S.T. academy or are unsuccessful in passing their probationary period, and had transferred from another State agency, may have restoration rights as per NAC 284.458 or NAC 284.460. Special Requirements A valid Nevada Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Some positions are subject to call-out or call-back. Some positions require statewide travel. Some positions require work on evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Additional Position Criteria Have you ever resigned in lieu of termination or been terminated from any civil service employment for substantiated misconduct involving dishonesty? Note: For the purposes of this application, dishonesty includes untruthfulness; deception; misrepresentation; falsification; and dishonesty by admission or omission. Have you been notified that you failed a Department of Public Safety backgrounds process within the past 18 months or twice ever? Have you used any illegal use of a controlled substance within the listed time limits preceding the date of the application: a.Marijuana - Up to the date of application. b. All others, including hallucinogens or experimental drugs, and steroid use - 3 years. This is to include prescribed medication not prescribed to the candidate, schedule I, and II. Must be a citizen of the United States (born in the U.S. or Naturalized Citizen. Lawful permanent resident/Green card does not qualify). The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them. The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime. Have you been convicted of any offense above? The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence or documented history of physical violence. Have you been convicted or documented history of any offense above? Have you ever been convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude? For purposes of this application, moral turpitude refers to any conduct that is believed to be contrary to the community standards of honesty, justice, or good moral values. Also, a conviction includes probation, community supervision, or deferred adjudication. Have you been convicted of any offense above? The Examination 1)A POST Category I Physical fitness exam which consists of a vertical jump of 11.5 inches, Agility Run in 23.4 seconds; 24 sit-ups in 1 minute; 18 push-ups (not timed); a 300 meter-run in 82 seconds; and a 1.5 mile run in 20 minutes and 20 seconds.
    **Please note Academy Standards are 14 inches vertical jump, 19.5 agility run, 30 sit ups, 23 push-ups, 68 seconds for 300 meter and 16.57 for the 1.5-mile run.

    Exam Type: Training and Experience Evaluation

    The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
