Essential Job FunctionsWhat You’ll Be DoingObtains throat cultures, rectal swabs, or other specimens, performs other treatments such as replacing dressings, bathing a patient, or makes an assessment of family and home conditions.
Collects specimens and performs urinalysis tests.
Removes sutures and cleanses and dresses minor wounds and abrasions.
Gathers and records pertinent information through observations and interviews with patients and patient family members concerning patient and family medical history, diet habits, health problems, symptoms, and observed patient condition.
Checks frequently to ensure that patients are being prepared accurately and safely for examination and treatment and makes suggestions or demonstrates accurate methods.
Questions patients to determine symptoms or the nature of the injury and elicits as much information as possible about home and living conditions.
Informs the physician of significant factors affecting patient’s condition and notifies the designated nursing employee if a patient requires home health care or referral to another community health agency.
Prepares patients for examination and for treatment by screening, draping and positioning.
Takes patients’ blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration and holds and comforts patients when necessary.
In accordance with physician’s orders, administers medications orally, rectally, by inhalation and by intramuscular and subcutaneous injection.
Observes patient’s behavior, general appearance, physical condition, symptoms, emotional expression and responses to specific medications and treatment.
Performs treatments under the direction of physicians including the application of thermal blankets, ice bags, medicated packs and pressure bandages.
Prepares and lays out instruments and supplies, sets up equipment and hands instruments and supplies to the physician during procedures.
Oversees general clinic operations to assure the efficient processing of patients and proper utilization of clinic facilities.
Report on selected problems encountered in handling assigned cases, which may be of general interest, or require the involvement of or evaluation by other team members as needed.
Hangs and changes I.V. Fluid bottles, regulates and discontinues the flow and chocks for infiltration.
Performs simple test procedures such as tine tests or clini-tests.
Coordinates oxygen by catheter, mask and positive pressure machine and suctions respiratory passages and tracheostomies.
RequirementsTwo (2) years of experience as a licensed vocational nurse in either an inpatient setting or outpatient care environment.
All experience must be post-certification as a licensed vocational nurse, as issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs, California Board of Vocational Nursing, and Psychiatric Technicians.

Physical DemandsThis role requires moderate physical activity, including standing or walking for extended periods, as well as bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching. You may work on irregular surfaces, occasionally lift objects over 25 pounds, and frequently lift 10-25 pounds. You will be required to undergo a general medical examination for this position.

CANDIDATES ACHIEVING A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THIS EXAMINATION WILL BE ADDED TO THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
