    ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY:

    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion.     Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Administers and directs a medical radiation physics section providing consultative services to physicians engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

    Essential Job Functions

    Assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of Medical Radiation Physicists in the preparation of treatment plans, computation of dose rates and dose distribution patterns for the treatment of patients by external beam therapy and radioactive source therapy; and in the field of nuclear medicine to ensure correctness of determination of radiation dose to patients and proper doses of scanning.

    Prepares and justifies the personnel, equipment and space budget and reviews specifications for new equipment; in concert with physicians, determines operating parameters of new equipment.

    Administers and directs the development and use of computer systems and programs for the resolution of spatial and treatment problems in radiation beam therapy or for the more effective use of imaging systems.

    Acts as the LA General Medical Center Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or assign duties to qualified subordinate staff as needed.

    Directs the radiation safety program at the Medical Center in compliance with governing legal regulations and policies established by the Medical Center Radiation Safety Committee for the safety of patients and personnel.

    Plans, organizes, and administers the section by establishing proper goals and standards, recruiting and selecting employees, evaluating performance and resolving employee problems.

    Participates in interdisciplinary conferences with physicians to determine the proper direction of the radiotherapy program and to ensure optimal radiation physics participation.

    Directs and reviews the development of training programs in radiation physical and in the fields of diagnostic radiologic radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, and radiobiology for the training of physicians and technical personnel.

    Conducts lectures in medical radiation physics and radiology for resident physicians.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    A Ph.D. in physics, biophysics or medical physics -AND- five years' experience in the physics of radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and hospital safety.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    2 - Light.
    This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    In order to receive credit for the required degree you must include a legible copy of the degree and “official” transcripts (which shows proof of degree awarded), or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization, at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing application.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following:

    • Experience beyond the Minimum Requirements.
    • American Board of Radiology (ABR) Certification.
    In order to receive credit for the ABR certification you must include a legible copy of the certification at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing application.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination to be added to the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
