Full Job Description

The Refractory Superintendent is responsible for leading and managing all refractory related activities within the Melt Shop, ensuring the safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladles, Tundishes and other high temperatures processing equipment. This role oversees refractory maintenance strategies, installation, inspections, repairs and major shutdowns to maximize equipment availability, optimize refractory consumption and support production goals. The Refractory Superintendent provides leadership to employees and contractors, ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards, manages budgets and refractory inventories and drives continuous improvement initiatives focused on operational performance, asset reliability, refractory life extension and overall steelmaking efficiency.

  • Maintain constant awareness of operational conditions that may create safety risks for personnel, equipment, or the environment.
  • Responsible for communicating business-related issues opportunities to the next management level.
  • Responsible for following all Company Guidelines related to Safety and Environmental practices as applicable.
  • Responsible for business ensuring personal compliance with all regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring that subordinates follow all Company Guidelines related to environmental and Safety practices and that all resources needed to do are available in good condition, if applicable.


Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Metallurgical, Mechanical, Materials, Industrial or related technical field) preferred.
  • Technical degrees or equivalent combinations of education and relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • Additional training or certifications in refractory technology, maintenance management, project management or safety programs are preferred.
  • Preferable at least 5 years of experience in refractory installation, maintenance, inspection and repair in steel manufacturing or other high temperature industrial environments.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience leading refractory personnel and contractors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of refractory materials, lining systems, installation practices, dry-out procedures, and refractory performance evaluation.
  • Experience planning and coordinating refractory maintenance activities, outages lines and capital projects.
  • Proven experience managing refractory contractors, budgets, schedules and material inventories.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, risk assessments, permit work systems, and safe work practices in heavy industrial operations.
  • Experience conducting failure analysis, root cause investigations, and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Experience supporting Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), continue casting and Consteel Operations preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead cross functional teams.
