Note Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).
THE POSITION
The City of Sunnyvale is seeking motivated, reliable, energetic and skilled individuals interested in assisting with supervising youth groups in an afterschool setting.
Fun on the Run (FOTR) is a mobile recreational program that operates at local parks and/or elementary schools to provide after-school care to families. This position would oversee the day-to-day operations of FOTR as well as program staff who support the program. The successful candidate is required to operate a city vehicle to and from location. This program is housed in the Columbia Neighborhood Center work unit. FOTR serves children aged 6-11 and has maximum capacity of about 30 kids per session.
This program operates year-round on weekdays. Shifts may be available during morning and afternoon sessions, typically 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 2:00-5:30 p.m. Schedule may vary based on program needs.
Essential Job Functions
(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
- Supervise participants and program staff during programs/activities
- Plan, organize and implement both recreational and enrichment activities
- Lead the day-to-day operations at various elementary school sites
- Prepare reports, maintain files, and records
- Assist in ordering supplies and materials for projects and activities
- Assist in training, staff development, orientation, and guidance; provides input to performance evaluations
- Document all incidents involving injury, behavioral problems and/or any unusual events; and communicate appropriately to supervisor, parent/guardians and others
- Ensure the safety of program participants and staff by inspecting, patrolling, monitoring, and instructing on the safe use of program equipment and supplies; maintains a safe, clean, and tidy environment; reports unsafe conditions or illegal activities
- Take attendance and administer/organize other paperwork and forms as needed
- Interact and communicate effectively with children, staff, parents and City and District staff
- Plan program logistics and attend planning meetings and discussions
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires a near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age is 18 years old
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Two (2) years or two (2) summers of experience in after school or camp with youth
- Ability to drive a city vehicle
Licenses/Certificates:
Possession at time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license and a safe driving record.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with customer service
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Experience with staff/volunteer supervision
- Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Farsi
- Possess a First Aid/CPR Certification
- 32 semester or 48 quarter units completed in Recreation, Education, or Kinesiology or a closely related field
- Experience working directly with the public in a recreation or education setting
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook)
