Description

Perform supervisory, administrative, emergency and non-emergency health care and specialized detention work in the care and security of inmates to ensure their constitutional rights and welfare are safeguarded in the County Jail. This position coordinates and supervises administrative and operational characteristics necessary for optimum configuration in adherence to recognized standards of care established correctional health policies and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local laws or regulations. Supervises staff, complying with established policies, procedure, operational protocol standards, professional standards, and coordinates remedial action to correct operational deficiencies when recognized.

Examples of Duties

Performs medical procedures on inmates including taking vital signs, phlebotomy, disbursement and administration of medications, and providing physician directed patient care criteria and follow up.

Performs various assessments, evaluations, and diagnostics on inmates to determine health status, including assessments for infectious, acute, and chronic diseases, illness, or injury.

Performs health and welfare assessments on inmates and charts all findings; maintains files and records as needed; creates patient charts and charts documentation of orders and actions taken.

Performs minor surgical procedures.

Coordinates and oversees shift operations ensuring compliance of established policies, procedures, operational protocol standards, and professional standards by the medical staff; confer with, coordinate, and assist senior supervisory staff with remedial actions to correct operational deficiencies when recognized.

Monitors compliance with state and federal regulations relevant to the receipt, inventory, control, and disbursement of pharmaceuticals including controlled substances.

Assists physicians with evaluations and procedures during patient care clinics and operatory; initiate care plans as established by attending physicians and allied care providers.

Assists with the security and custodial maintenance of department records and the protected health information of inmate patients.

Trains new employees in operational standards and clinical processes.

Regular and punctual attendance is required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age.

Must be a United States citizen.

High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of five years of experience in a related field and a certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or Medical Assistant or;

High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of two years of experience in a related field and Certification as a Paramedic, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Registered Nurse.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification and Nationally Certified Correctional Health Provider preferred.

Certification as a Jailer in the State of Texas is preferred.

Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver’s license within 90 days of employment.

Family Medical Leave:Denton Countyemployees who have been employed for one year and who have worked 1250 hours in the preceding year may be eligible for up to twelve weeks of FMLA leave.
