Job Description

The Deputy Sheriff role in the Sheriff's Office is non-exempt. The application process includes downloading and completing the WCSO application, F-3, and questionnaire documents. Incomplete submissions will not be considered and a resume cannot substitute the required documents. Documents can be notarized during the interview process.

Compensation/Benefits include a starting salary of $54,516. Upon completion of field training, applicants may receive a 2.5% adjustment to the salary plus a competitive benefits package. Deputies will receive a take home car and can reside 30 miles outside of the county line. Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification is required.

Description of Work

Employees perform a variety of law enforcement duties including patrol, civil paper processing, educational, crime prevention, and community service. Work includes patrolling a geographic region within the County during a shift in a patrol car; preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; helping victims; transporting inmates; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; testifying in court; and executing related assignments. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Deputy Sheriff Sergeant.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requirements include being a U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age, a high school graduate or GED with some law enforcement training or experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must not have committed or convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors. Must pass a background investigation and pre-employment polygraph. Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification is required. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and have completed firearms training upon hire.

Additional Requirements and Qualifications

General Certification of a Deputy/Law Enforcement Officer or Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification from a N.C. Accredited program is required. Deputies can reside 30 miles outside of Wilson County.
