Summary

Airport Service Worker I California Redwood Coast - Humboldt County Airport (KACV)

Under general supervision, performs routine and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of airport facilities, runways and equipment; maintains airport safety and security and provides emergency services as necessary; performs related work as assigned. Airport Service Worker I is the entry level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in aviation services and airport operations. This class is alternately staffed with Airport Service Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

Examples Of Duties

• Conducts routine safety and security checks of airport grounds, facilities and buildings; reports and/or corrects problems to ensure safe operation of the airport; maintains and ensures clearance of restricted areas.
• Checks and secures airport terminal and other buildings at the end of the work day; periodically checks for trespassers, vandals and other unauthorized persons and vehicles; notifies proper authorities as necessary.
• Assists aircraft operators in parking and tie down activities; services aircraft by adding fuel and engine oil and washing windshields; collects and records fuel and parking fees.
• Accepts fuel deliveries and fills fuel truck; monitors fuel quality and inventory; checks fueling equipment.
• Provides emergency services by operating fire fighting equipment and extinguishing aircraft fires; administers first aid; attends aircraft fire fighting and first aid training classes.
• Maintains the airfield by changing and repairing runway and taxiway lights, sweeping runways and taxiways and resetting breakers.
• Performs minor maintenance and repairs on airport buildings, facilities, equipment and vehicles; operates and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, forklifts, pumps and power and hand tools.
• Maintains records and maintains various files related to the work performed; uses a radio to receive and dispatch information.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Principles, practices and terminology of airport operations and services.
• Tools, equipment and supplies used in the maintenance and repair of airport buildings, facilities and grounds.
• Federal Aviation Administration and state rules and regulations governing airport operations and safety.
• Airport security, safety and emergency plans.
• Operation and maintenance of airport fire fighting equipment.
• Safe work methods and safety practices related to the work.
• Basic recordkeeping principles and practices.

Skill in:

• Conducting safety and security checks to identify problem situations.
• Fueling aircraft safely and efficiently.
• Operating and maintaining a variety of vehicles, equipment and tools.
• Responding quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Operating fire fighting equipment, extinguishing fires and administering aid.
• Maintaining and repairing airport buildings, facilities and equipment.
• Making accurate arithmetic calculations and keeping basic records.
• Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Other Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to maneuver equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within six months of hire.

Desirable Education and Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is: Airport Service Worker I: Two years of experience in general building and facility maintenance work. Airport Service Worker II: In addition to the above, one year of airport operations and maintenance experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Airport Service Worker I.
