Job Summary

Performs a full range of law enforcement duties necessary to ensure public safety, protect life and property, and enforce laws and ordinances. In partnership with our community, provides an exemplary level of service and protection to the residents and businesses of Crested Butte and to all those who may visit, work in, or travel through our community. Serves the community through integrity, honesty, dedication, loyalty, and professionalism to enforce the law without prejudice or bias.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides a variety of law enforcement services, including patrolling assigned public areas; observes, detects, and apprehends violators of traffic and other laws; observes and takes appropriate actions regarding physical hazards and illegal criminal activities.
  • Performs activities associated with investigations and crime prevention; composes detailed reports; collects evidence; assists with filing cases; testifies in court.
  • Provides information, assistance and directions to the public; assists with locked or stalled vehicles.
  • Responds to a variety of complaints including, but not limited to, automobile accidents, robberies, assaults, deaths, domestic disturbances, suicidal persons, child abuse, fires, alarms and other such incidents; administers first aid in emergency situations.
  • Provides traffic control for vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Supports and coordinates efforts with other jurisdictions, law enforcement agencies, courts of law and Town staff.
  • Safely operates a variety of vehicles, firearms and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
  • Performs animal control duties as required.
  • Performs public education programs assigned.
  • Maintains a variety of detailed records; makes periodic and special reports of work performed.
  • Ensures that safe work practices and procedures are followed and that appropriate safety equipment is utilized.
  • Works with citizen groups to resolve community public safety issues; identify areas of potential problems, crime, disorder, traffic or unsafe conditions; reports and initiates corrective actions.
  • Recover, impound, and return stolen, evidential or lost property items

Required Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and techniques of law enforcement.
  • Municipal, State and Federal ordinances, laws and regulations.
  • Use of law enforcement firearms, tools and equipment.
  • Safety practices and procedures; basic first aid.
  • Proper handling and storage of evidence.
  • Standard office administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping systems and the operation of office equipment, computers, and associated software.
  • Core Competency areas (not an exhaustive list): Animal Control, Computer Skills, Communication, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Civil Law, Colorado Revised Statutes, Federal Law, Municipal Ordinances, Traffic Ordinances, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and Officer Safety

Minimum Job Requirements

Equivalent to or high school diploma, successful completion of Police Academy training and one (1) year of experience in a law enforcement or security function. Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or obtain one within thirty (30) days of date of employment. Must possess a valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or obtain one within 1 year from date of employment. Must be 21 at time of POST certification. Other Necessary Requirements Background Investigation Employment is contingent upon the results of a comprehensive education/experience background investigation and a criminal history record check. Medical Examination Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical and psychological examination performed by licensed physicians. A pre-employment drug test is part of the examination. Working Conditions and Physical Effort Strength and physical ability to perform duties in a variety of settings, including operating vehicles and firearms; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking, running, climbing and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds of force; strength to safely restrain individuals; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation. Work is subject to performance under adverse environmental conditions, with exposure to potentially life-threatening situations.
