Deputy Sheriff
Performs specific law enforcement and security duties particular to the Department of the Sheriff, transports inmates and detainees, and executes warrants and court orders; performs related duties as required.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
AGE: Candidates must be at least 19 years of age and have not reached their 43rd birthday on or before the date of commencement of the test (September 19, 2026). Candidates shall not be considered for appointment until they reach their 20th birthday. Time spent in military service as defined in Section 243 of the Military Law may be deducted from actual age up to a maximum of 7 years (Section 58, Civil Service Law). Veterans: If you have reached your 43rd birthday by the date of commencement of the test (September 19, 2026), you must submit your DD 214 - military separation papers with your application.
EDUCATION: Candidates must be graduates of a senior high school or must possess a high school equivalency diploma before their names can be certified for appointment. NOTE: Proof of claimed education will be required at the start of the background investigation.
LICENSE: A valid New York State Driver license will be required at the time of certification from the eligible list.
CITIZENSHIP: Candidates must be United States citizens at time of appointment.
NOTE: According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met.

For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences. Applying written information (laws, rules, regulations, procedures, etc.) in civil law enforcement and court-related situations - These questions test how well you can apply written information, in the form of rules, to given situations similar to those typically encountered by civil law enforcement employees, court attendants, and court security officers. All information needed to answer the questions is contained in the rules, regulations, etc., which are cited.
