Social Welfare Examiner Trainee (HELP Program) - Cortland County DSSThis is a trainee position in the competitive class for which candidates undergo on-the-job training to become qualified as a Social Welfare Examiner. Candidates who successfully complete one year of permanent competitive class service as a Social Welfare Examiner Trainee will advance to the journey level title without further examination. The work involves responsibility for learning the duties performed by a Social Welfare Examiner and assisting in the various aspects of the journey level position, including interviewing applicants, determining eligibility, making appropriate referrals for services and performing work necessary for the maintenance of individual cases. Trainees work closely with a higher level staff member to acquire the knowledge, skill and ability to advance to the journey level position. Additionally, the incumbent will attend formal and informal training sessions. As the traineeship progresses, trainees will be assigned progressively complex tasks and activities to be performed independently.
