Job TitleCorrectional Case Worker (2600009F)Location & SalaryLocation: Downtown – St. Louis, MOSalary: $38,974 – $58,500Position DetailsPosition Grade: 204GJob Type: Full-Time (Permanent)Department: City Justice CenterExamination Number: EX1646Hiring Incentive: $1,500 upon completion of the probationary period (not available to current City employees)Essential Functions & ResponsibilitiesApply counseling principles and practices in a correctional setting.Maintain contact with community-based resources.Frequent visits in housing areas to interact with inmates.Assess/review inmate custody/housing classification.Orientate and assess inmate needs.Obtain & record emergency contact information.Submit medical, psychological, educational and various referrals.Establish and determine short- and long-term goals.Accurately record inmate interactions and services rendered in custody records.Refer and track inmate group counseling participation.Provide crisis intervention in acute emotional or physical distress situations.Review inmate disciplinary reports for adherence to due process.Conduct inmate disciplinary hearings.Maintain and update inmate custody records.Communicate with internal and external customers.Prepare and submit various forms and reports.Produce and maintain monthly reports.Maintain and handle confidential and sensitive information.Interact and communicate in work groups and committees.Query the Integrated Jail Management System.Electronically maintain logs.Conduct exit interviews.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesData Utilization: Ability to perform basic level data analysis including review, classify, categorize, prioritize and reference data, statutes and guidelines.Human Interaction: Ability to provide paraprofessional level counseling in semi-specialized areas, such as social service referral and casework.Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Ability to operate a variety of office equipment such as computer terminal, typewriter, telephone, fax machine, calculator, printer and photocopier.Verbal Aptitude: Ability to utilize advisory data and information such as detainee records, case notes, referral recommendations, incident reports, contact sheets, grievance forms, treatment plans, intake forms, directories, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form, exercise independent judgment.Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria.Environmental Factors: Work normally performed in an office environment under generally safe and comfortable conditions with limited risk of injury.Physical Requirements: Ability to lift files and office materials up to twenty pounds.Sensory Requirements: Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects.QualificationsThree years' experience in a correctional, parole and probation, or comparable setting; conducting casework services and investigations and preparing detailed reports; OR an Associate's degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Services or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Preferences: A Bachelor's degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Services or a closely related field; and/or experience in substance abuse counseling or similar rehabilitative activities in community outreach programs or in a correctional environment.LicenseMust possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request.
