Correctional Officers provide supervision of inmates to ensure a safe and secure environment. The Outagamie County Jail offers medical, educational, emotional, spiritual, and nutritional services designed to help offenders cope with incarceration and successfully re-enter the community.HoursThis position involves shift work and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.Average 24 hours per week; some weekends and holidays are required.LocationCounty Administration Building, Appleton320 S. For more information, visit Outagamie County Benefits .ResponsibilitiesConduct required physical checks of inmates and cell areas, monitoring for safety and security threats and verifying inmate location.Monitor inmate living areas via camera to ensure cleanliness, safety, and security; conduct inspections, searches, and oversee recreational, educational, and program activities.Distribute meals, canteen items, mail, uniforms, bedding, and other supplies to inmates; escort inmates to visits and programs.Maintain accurate and complete records of inmate counts, status changes, activities, and events; write clear reports for notable incidents.Restrains hostile and non‑compliant inmates as necessary, using minimal force as trained.Respond to emergency situations according to department policies and procedures.Take custody of, book, and release inmates according to policy; obtain and record required information and manage Huber inmate releases.Control access to and from the jail, greet, check IDs, and document visitors.Conduct active law‑enforcement measures within the jail setting.Protect others with little to no notice during crisis or emergency situations.Remain calm, collected, and professional during emergency situations.Accept the dangers, stresses, discipline, and time demands associated with the position.QualificationsMust be at least 18 years of age.Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.Must meet requirements and become Wisconsin Corrections Certified within the first year of employment.Must successfully complete mandatory physical agility tests, psychological tests, post‑offer physical evaluation, and other fitness assessments.Proficiency with computer software and applications used by the department.Must operate general office equipment such as copy and fax machines.Must meet department standards of physical condition.Must communicate effectively in English.Must possess basic arithmetic skills.Must maintain regular and predictable attendance; must work overtime or extra hours as necessary.Must handle frequent exposure to high degrees of danger.Must maintain a high degree of physical conditioning.Essential Physical DemandsStand, walk, and sit for extended periods.Linger and occasionally lift or carry up to 50 lbs.; frequently up to 25 lbs.; use proper body mechanics.Push, pull, or move with a force of up to 51.2 lbs.; maneuver carts, wheelchairs, or cell doors.Climb stairs (up to 48 flights per shift).Maintain balance and perform activities requiring stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, and twisting.Frequent use of hands and wrists; use both hands and both legs required.Effective verbal communication and hearing capabilities.Essential visual acuity to perform duties safely and effectively.Work EnvironmentWork in close proximity to inmates, including those who may be uncooperative or confrontational.Exposure to loud noises, unpleasant odors, and potentially stressful or emergency situations while maintaining composure and exercising good judgment.Navigate secured areas, including locked doors, gates, and controlled access points.Work both independently and as part of a team in a structured and regulated setting.Frequent interaction with law enforcement personnel, medical staff, and other facility staff.Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required depending on operational needs.Safety protocols and training are provided to support staff in maintaining a secure and professional environment.Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required, including but not limited to tight‑fitting respirators and gas masks.OUTAGAMIE COUNTY IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
