Description

Under the general supervision of a Police Department Supervisor, incumbent is responsible for investigating complaints and concerns regarding animal related issues and code violations of a general nature within the Town of Davie.

Minimum Requirements (Must meet by the closing date of the posting unless otherwise stated)

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of college level course work
  • Three (3) years of experience in a compliance capacity, such as law enforcement, code compliance, zoning compliance, or related public oriented situation
  • Possession of a valid Class “E” Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must be physically able to operate a vehicle.
  • Must successfully complete a 40-hour minimum standard training course approved by the Florida Animal Control Association, per Florida Statute, Chapter 828, section 27 within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Ability to work nights, weekend and holidays.


Essential Functions

  • Responds to complaints concerning animals running at large, cruelty to animals, injured animals, animals creating nuisances and animal attacks on humans and other animals. Responds to complaints that involve livestock, exotic and domestic animals.
  • Investigates all complaints regarding animals to include but not limited to, alleged animal bites to humans or domestic animals, including checking for current rabies vaccinations, quarantining animals and releasing animals from quarantine. Allegations of cruelty and/or neglect involving domestic animals, exotic and livestock.
  • Drives animal transport vehicle s , while patrolling the Town.
  • Interacts routinely with citizens concerning animal problems often under stressful conditions.
  • Coordinates activities of animal control with Police Officers, Town Code Enforcement Officers, Broward County Animal Control, State of Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission and other agencies that can provide assistance.
  • Prepares and maintains written field reports, lost and found database and social media page for lost and found animals pick up by the department and those submitted by the residents.
  • Performs Town-wide patrolling as needed.
  • Captures and transports stray and injured animals and those posing a threat to the safety, health and welfare of the public.
  • Conducts dangerous dog investigations including monitoring the dog’s location and the owner’s compliance with provisions of the Ordinance.
  • Conducts inspections of pet shops and hobby farms to ensure compliance with the Code.
  • Reviews and conducts follow-up on animal-related reports from the Police Department as needed.
  • Investigates cruelty/neglect cases and coordinates with the Police Department in transportation of victim, filing of charges, completion of affidavits and attendance at County Court; assists Special Victims’ Unit on felony animal cases.
  • Maintains records and correspondence, including letters of violation and affidavits; performs research to prepare cases against violations.
  • Delivers or coordinates delivery of violation notices; contacts and coordinates witness’s appearances.
  • Implements established policies, directives and objectives of the department and the Town.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • Cleans and maintains animal holding kennels and cages.
  • Keeps inventory of all animal handling equipment including but not limited to traps, carriers, ketch-all poles. Submits requests for replacement as needed to the quartermaster.
  • Launders all lightly soiled towels, blankets and bedding utilizing the on-site washer/dryer.
  • Communicates effectively over assigned radio to initiate and respond to dispatched calls.
  • Provides public education to residents and groups and attends events as directed.
  • Attends training conferences, events, seminars, meetings, hearings and other venues as directed.
  • Provides education to the police department employees.

Applicants Must Not Have:
  • Felony convictions;
  • Driver's license suspensions within five (5) years of the date of this application;
  • Steroid usage within three (3) years of the date of this application;
  • Visible tattoos above the collarbone on the neck, face, head, scalp or on the hands;
  • Used any illegal controlled substances within three years of the date of this application with the exception of marijuana.
  • All applicants must not have used marijuana or cannabis in any form within one year of the date of this application.
  • Used any tobacco products within six (6) months of the date of this application.
  • Been dishonorably discharged from the military.
