This position is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the Department marine enforcement, recreational enforcement, education and safety programs for the DNR statewide. The RSOS Major ensures the efficient and effective implementation of the Hunter, Boating, Snowmobile, and ATV safety programs, as well as the hunter, angler, and trapper recruitment/retention/reactivation (R3) and shooting range programs throughout Wisconsin. It develops and maintains working relationships with key internal and external partners and customers while integrating the safety programs and other educational efforts with other departmentwide information, education and outreach programs.The Conservation Warden Major - Training supervises and administers the PSRP statewide training program, directing long‑range planning initiatives, budget and operational planning and implementation, directing team operations and employee supervision, and evaluating program efficiency and effectiveness. This position is responsible for the development of training policies and procedures, implements and coordinates the hiring and training of a 220 FTE Conservation Warden force and 12 seasonal LTE Community Service Officers (CSOs). Through division‑wide program supervisors, this position indirectly manages up to 100 Training and Standards Bureau Certified Instructors, 100 Background Investigators, and 60 Field Training Officers that support the training bureau's hiring, academy, and training programs. The Training Major is responsible for ensuring consistent application of all Department policy for the enforcement program, as well as appropriate training to maintain proficiency and compliance.Salary InformationStarting pay for these positions is between $58.50 to $61.08 per hour (or $121,680 to $127,046.40 annually), in addition to excellent benefits. Current state employee pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.These positions are included in the classification Conservation Warden Major within Pay Schedule/Range 81‑01. These positions are not represented by a collective bargaining unit. This position may spend a significant amount of time in travel status, especially for training events or deployments. All trainings and deployments are work assignments and compensated consistent with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan and DNR/DPSRP policies.Travel : Travel throughout the state is required and significant, as well as overnight statewide travel. Frequent travel to Madison (as well as the Training Academy for the Training Bureau Director position), with overnight stays—occasionally with short notice—will be required to meet programmatic obligations.Driver License Requirement : The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three or more moving violations and/or at‑fault accidents in the past two years, or who have an OWI/DUE violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.Physical/ Environmental Factors : This position is physically demanding, and exertion can vary from sedentary work to very heavy work. (Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.) Additionally, people in this position should be able to bend at waist, move from a prone position to a kneeling position to a standing position. They should also be able to crouch, crawl, climb, and balance. This position requires the ability to lift objects from the floor, carry objects, push, pull, reach, and handle objects with both their hands and fingers. This position also requires the ability to physically engage with persons who are subject to arrest, including obtaining and maintaining physical control of a resisting person, which may require take‑downs, falls, or other physical actions and risk to bodily injury. This position may also experience long periods of sitting, standing or walking. Additionally, this position requires people to perceive the nature of sounds by the ear with or without correction and see objects clearly at a distance of 20 feet or more away, and as close as 20 inches or less, with or without correction.Background Checks : We consider all qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state, and local law.
