ABOUT USEast Bay Regional Park District's Public Safety Department serves over 25 million annual visitors. Our patrol area includes 73 parks spanning across 126,809 acres, 1,330 miles of trails, and 55 miles of shoreline in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.Our Police Department is a full‑service POST‑recognized law enforcement agency with 76 sworn officers. Units include Air Support, Marine, Equestrian, Special Enforcement, Investigations, and a 24‑hour 911 Communications Center. Our Fire Department provides fire suppression, hazardous materials responses, search and rescue, auto extrication, emergency medical services, and prescribed burns. A Lifeguard Services Unit serves 15 environments, including pools, lagoons, lakes, and coastlines.THE OPPORTUNITYCommunications Dispatcher at Public Safety HQ in Castro Valley, CA. Lateral positions. Rotational dispatch and routine, non‑hazardous law‑enforcement functions.WHO WE'RE LOOKING FORPassionate about helping others.Excellent oral and written communication.Capable of establishing and maintaining positive working relationships.Comfortable making decisions with limited information.Able to exercise authority and take control in emergency situations.RESPONSIBILITIESEffectively dispatch police, fire, and park operations resources.Receive calls for general park information, police or fire assistance, including 911 and other emergency calls.Transmit and receive radio messages.Analyze situations and dispatch appropriate units.Dispatch mobile units and other equipment to specified locations.Make telephone requests for ambulance, vehicle towing, or other emergency services.Monitor other agencies' radio frequencies and rebroadcast pertinent information.Communicate with other agencies to coordinate medical responses.Operate and adjust radio‑telephone transmitting and receiving equipment.Assist in communications aid during critical incidents or emergencies.Participate in mandatory off‑site training.Perform clerical duties: typing, maintaining message logs, preparing reports, filing, answering phones, responding to inquiries.Process police, fire, medical, and field reports.Perform data entry and retrieval.Collect monies for fees, permits, copies of reports, or fines.Serve as Communications Supervisor in their absence.Perform related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Completion of the twelfth grade.Experience: Two years of recent, responsible work experience.License or Certificate: Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.Knowledge:Purpose and general methods of police and fire dispatching.Routine clerical operations.Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.Ability to:Type 40 words per minute.Multi‑task.File and prepare accurate reports.Manual dexterity to operate telephone, radio, and computer keyboard equipment.Speak English proficiently, clearly, and audibly.Memorize and retain information quickly.Meet physical requirements such as vision and hearing.Spell correctly.Learn laws, regulations, and rules applicable to the area.Learn operating procedures and policies of assigned division.Follow instructions, reason clearly, analyze situations accurately, act quickly and effectively in emergency situations.Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and internal staff.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTMust pass a Level 3 background screening.Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts.Must wear a Park District uniform.Must obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certificates within the probationary period.UNION AFFILIATIONPolice Association (PA) represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding.
