SHERIFF'S DETENTION NURSEThe County of San Diego invites your interest in an excellent career opportunity!Starting salary based on qualifications at time of appointment.Future Salary IncreaseJune 2026 – 5.67% increase to base pay (3.5% across‑the‑board + 2.17% market adjustment)June 2027 – 5.17% increase to base pay (3% across‑the‑board + 2.17% market adjustment)Additional Premiums:$1.50/hr for working evening shift$2.50/hr for working graveyard shift10% institutional work location premiumFree food in detention facilitiesAnnual uniform allowanceResponsibilities:Perform full scope of medical and mental health nursing functions for incarcerated individuals in detention facilities.Provide routine and emergency nursing services within established procedures, protocols, and legal scope of practice.Operate under Sheriff's Office procedures and applicable state laws, department rules, regulations, and policies.Qualifications:A valid California Registered Nurse License at time of appointment.Current CPR and AED certification at time of appointment.Desirable Traits:Nursing experience in correctional, psychiatric, geriatric, critical care, or emergency settings.Correctional Health Care Professional certification.Strong communication skills and ethical behavior.Working Conditions:Locked detention facility environment with all encounters done in presence of a deputy.Exposure to communicable diseases.Interaction with incarcerated persons with psychiatric illnesses and unpredictable behavior.Potential verbal abuse from patients withdrawing from illegal substances.Shifts include morning, mid‑day, night, holidays, and weekends.Background Qualifications:Reputation for honesty and trustworthiness.Felony convictions disqualifying.Misdemeanor convictions may disqualify depending on type, number, severity, and recency.Subject to thorough background investigation, including psychological or polygraph testing.Benefits:Shift and location premiums.Free meals.Uniform allowance.Career growth within County of San Diego.Veteran's Preference Policy: The County offers preferential credits for military service.
