Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide quality, comprehensive vision care services to outpatients and inpatients as assigned.
  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of ophthalmic conditions, including complex conditions.
  • Demonstrate expertise in ophthalmic imaging and interpretation of results.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illnesses through formal and informal continuing education.

  • Participate in OPPE, Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation, and other peer review activities when requested.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must have a Doctor of Optometry degree from an approved school or college of optometry.
  • The optometry degree must have been obtained from a school or college approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year the program was completed.
  • Approved schools include United States and Canadian schools or colleges of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education for the year the program was completed.
  • Must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if required for continuing active licensure.
  • Must have successfully completed residency training approved by VA in an accredited post-graduate optometry training program; or
  • Must have comparable experience consisting of two years of licensed clinical optometric practice in the United States with active involvement in the management of medically complex patients.
  • Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain subject to testing requirements for this testing designated position.
