Job Title Correctional OfficerCompensation Correctional Officer: $44,680.90 per yearCorporal: $46,924.80 per yearLocation All facilities across the State of Oklahoma.Training Academy Applicants must attend an 8-week live-in academy in Oklahoma City from Sunday 6:00 PM through Thursday 6:00 PM, returning home on weekends. Academy starts October 12 2026. Lodging and meals are provided. Applicants will work at their selected facility with a Field Training Officer until the academy begins.Facility Assignment Facility assignments are determined based on the facility or county preferences listed in the initial application.Typical Functions Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintain security of an assigned area or post.Provide security and supervision over inmate work crews; escort inmates to work sites; inventory and control all equipment, weapons, tools and keys.Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift; observe activities and movements of inmates; manage inmate conduct, work and discipline.Maintain order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspect living areas, facilities and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; make reports on incidents.Operate manually or electronically controlled security equipment maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public.Conduct inmate counts; perform searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforce institutional rules and regulations.Prepare written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement.Participate on escape and apprehension teams; respond to riots and fires.Level Descriptors Correctional Officers (Basic Level) receive formal and on-the-job training in security and custody duties. They perform routine security, control and custody duties, supervise inmate work crews, patrol yards, and manage inmate conduct. They are responsible for interpreting and executing post orders.Corporal (Career Level) responsibilities include providing security and control of inmates at a full performance level, maintaining discipline and security among inmates, and interpreting and executing post orders.Qualifications Education and ExperienceMinimum age 20 years.Possession of 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university; or possession of a high school diploma or GED and completion of an approved training course.Corporal: additional 12 months of experience in correctional or security work for a governmental agency or private corrections agency.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesFundamentals of English usage, basic math, reporting writing.Use and care of firearms.Proper restraint methods and techniques, self-defense methods.Discipline methods required for inmates under restraint; psychology of inmate behavior.Evaluate situations and adopt effective courses of action.Exercise alertness; act quickly and effectively in emergency situations.Follow oral and written instructions.Gather and organize facts and complete clear, concise reports.Communicate effectively.Establish and maintain effective working relationships.Maintain proficiency with firearms.Assess and manage conflicts within the inmate population.Special Requirements Satisfactory completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation through Human Capital Management.Satisfactory completion of pre- employment and annual physical examination.Valid driver's license at time of appointment.Subject to drug testing.Willing and able to work any assigned shift, day of the week, and additional shifts as required.May be designated as peace officers; must meet training and screening requirements, including psychological and physical testing, basic police course or peace officer certification.Training includes physical conditioning, self-defense tactics, and use of oleoresin capsicum spray.Ineligible if convicted of crimes requiring registration under the Sex Offenders Registration Act, crimes of moral turpitude, non-violent felonies without pardon, other felony offenses, misdemeanor domestic violence offenses not pardoned or expunged, or dishonorable military discharge.Positions in this job family are safety sensitive per 63 O.S. § 427.8.Equal Opportunity Employment The State of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of genetic information, race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability.Current active State of Oklahoma employees must apply for open positions internally through the Workday Jobs Hub.#J-18808-Ljbffr
