Contact the Sheriff's Office for an application.Contact: Petersburg Sheriff's Office8 Courthouse Ave, Petersburg, VA 23803Office: (804) 733‑2369Fax: (804) 481‑8238ResponsibilitiesPerforms routine protective and responsible human support service work; ensuring the care and security of inmates and court.Ensures the security of a courthouse, including judges, judicial staff, court employees, and the general public.Handles tasks such as handing papers to the judge, ejecting people from the courtroom, and assisting witnesses.Watches over a jury and monitors court proceedings.Monitors or manages metal detectors, doorways, and hallways.Ensures that no weapons are brought into the courthouse and that the public complies with building safety rules.Maintains simple records and prepares reports when necessary.Carries out oral and written directives accurately.Performs duties under the regular supervision of the Lt. Colonel and Major.QualificationsGood knowledge of the principles of modern penology, especially in the areas of correctional security and discipline, and behavior patterns and attitudes of individuals or groups in custody.Ability to perform for long periods under varying working conditions.Ability to use good judgment in controlling prisoners individually and in groups, some of whom may be emotionally disturbed or unruly.Ability to learn the principles and techniques of first aid and to administer first aid in emergency situations.Ability to assist in supervising the work of inmates.Ability to perform tasks such as handing papers to the judge, ejecting people from the courtroom, and helping witnesses leave the stand.Ability to take charge of watching over a jury.Ability to remain alert at all times and to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.Must maintain telephone number for emergency contact.Must be a citizen of the United States.Must have a valid VA Driver's License.Must maintain certification in all Criminal Justice Services Commission mandated training as a Jail Officer in the State of Virginia.Must be 21 years of age or older.Must not have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty or no contest to, a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia.Possesses experience supervising individuals and groups of people.Can endure long periods of repetition in routine duties.May require working irregular hours.All applicants will undergo a criminal background check and a driving record inquiry, and must pass a pre‑employment drug screening test, written test, medical examination, and polygraph examination.All employees of the Petersburg City Sheriff Office are responsible for following direction provided by, or instructions given by, the Sheriff, whether directly or through the Chain of Command.NOTE: Applications will not be accepted online at the City of Petersburg's website.
