Position OverviewApplicants must have successfully completed Montana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Police Officer Training or EQ Challenge and must have obtained Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification as a Peace Officer.This position is not eligible for sponsorship.The mission of the MSU Billings Police Department is to support MSU Billings by partnering with the university community and external stakeholders to cultivate a safe and secure academic environment that enriches the quality of life of all MSU Billings students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The University Police Department is a State of Montana accredited law enforcement agency and serves as the fire and public safety office for the university.ResponsibilitiesPatrol Officers serve as members of the departments' patrol operations team and follow directives put forth by leadership, taking personal ownership for the success of the department and university.Patrol Officers ensure the goals of the department are achieved through a broad range of law enforcement, security, and safety duties and assignments on university property and surrounding areas.Patrol Officers maintain public order and protect lives and property.Patrol Officers perform building safety and security, fire code inspections, fire extinguishers and AED inspections, and enforce all Montana state and local criminal/traffic laws. They enforce parking rules, issue citations, and issue no‑trespass notices.Patrol Officers are required to work 24 hours/7 days per week, including days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays, and are required to work overtime.Patrol Officers perform all duties in a professional and service‑oriented manner.Patrol Officers will be required to perform all duties as outlined in the officer job description.Conduct criminal and non‑criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, DUI detection and enforcement, and interview victims, suspects, and witnesses.Apprehend suspects, offenders, and individuals with warrants; issue citations, notice to appear, and no‑trespass notices.Preserve crime scenes, collect and preserve evidence, and provide oral testimony in legal proceedings.Enforce university policies and procedures, deliver crime prevention and personal safety education presentations, and maintain public order.Respond to criminal behavior and calls promptly and professionally.Enforce federal, state, local laws, and university policies; provide flow of pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic around the university community.Prepare written reports and other documentation as required.Provide law enforcement assistance to other agencies and coordinate with Billings Police, Billings Fire, and AMR during emergencies.Assist with maintenance and upkeep of UPD equipment and perform other law enforcement duties as assigned.Respond to medical, fire, and other emergency situations, including bomb threats and disturbances.Respond to pedestrian and traffic accidents; handle resistance and aggression appropriately while making arrests.Conduct routine motor vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols, assist with security at university functions, conduct building and boiler checks, and monitor building deficiencies via the FAMIS reporting system.Assist Facilities Services with fire code inspections and fire drills; maintain monthly and annual fire extinguishers and AEDs, lock and unlock buildings.Train with Residence Hall Directors, Resident Assistants, and Housing & Residence Life staff.Perform other campus safety and security duties as assigned.QualificationsSuccessfully complete Montana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Police Officer Training or EQ Challenge and obtain Montana P.O.S.T. certification as a Peace Officer.Possess a valid and insurable Montana driver's license.Maintain annual firearms and CEW/Taser qualification and CPR, First Aid, Narcan, and AED certification.Experience with high‑risk calls for service, including barricaded subjects, burglaries, bomb threats, gun calls, drug and alcohol overdose, domestic disturbances, fights, mentally ill persons, and potential contact with blood‑borne pathogens.Work in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.Work 12‑hour shifts or 24‑hour shifts per week, with variety of days, afternoons, nights, weekends, holidays, and regular overtime.Physical ability to walk, run, pursue fleeing subjects on foot, climb stairs, and physically restrain and handcuff resisting or combative persons.Knowledge of Montana criminal law, traffic law, Rules of Criminal Procedure, municipal codes, university policies/procedures, state and federal laws, fire safety codes, university parking rules/regulations, university geography, and other law enforcement agencies operating in or around Yellowstone County.Proficiency with firearms (handgun and rifle); active shooter training.Excellent decision‑making, verbal, and written communication skills.Operate a motor vehicle safely under various conditions and circumstances.Use discretion commensurate with lawful authority;
