The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees.Essential Functions And ResponsibilitiesApply counseling principles and practices in a correctional setting.Maintain contact with community-based resources.Frequent visits in housing areas to interact with inmates.Assess/review inmate custody/housing classification.Orientate and assess inmate needs.Obtain & record emergency contact information.Submit medical, psychological, educational and various referrals.Establish and determine short- and long-term goals.Accurately record inmate interactions and services rendered in custody records.Refer and track inmate group counseling participation.Provide crisis intervention in acute emotional or physical distress situations.Review inmate disciplinary reports for adherence to due process.Conduct inmate disciplinary hearings.Maintain and update inmate custody records.Communicate with internal and external customers.Prepare and submit various forms and reports.Produce and maintain monthly reports.Maintain and handle confidential and sensitive information.Interact and communicate in work groups and committees.Query the Integrated Jail Management System.Electronically maintain logs.Conduct exit interviews.Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesData Utilization: Basic level of data analysis, reviewing, classifying, prioritizing mandatory data, statutes and guidelines.Human Interaction: Provide paraprofessional level counseling in semi-specialized areas such as social service referral and casework.Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Operate a variety of office equipment (computer, telephone, fax, etc.).Verbal Aptitude: Utilize advisory data and information such as detainee records, case notes, referral recommendations, incident reports, contact sheets, grievance forms, treatment plans, intake forms, directories, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.Mathematical Aptitude: Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Functional Reasoning: Apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions, exercise independent judgment.Situational Reasoning: Apply judgment in evaluating information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria.Environmental Factors: Work is performed in an office environment with minimal risk.Physical Requirements: Lift files and office materials up to twenty pounds.Sensory Requirements: Recognize differences between characteristics of shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects.QualificationsThree years' experience in a correctional, parole, probation, or comparable setting, conducting casework services and investigations and preparing detailed reports for the purpose of program development and services of clientsOR an Associate's degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Services or a closely related fieldOR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.PreferencesA Bachelor's degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Services or a closely related fieldAND/OR experience in substance abuse counseling or similar rehabilitative activities in community outreach programs or in a correctional environment.LicenseMust possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis.
