St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, operating within the Department of Judicial Administration, provides courtroom related services. We are seeking dependable, self‑motivated individuals for Bailiff and Civil Process positions.Bailiff : maintains peace, order, and security within the courtroom. Starting salary $18.07 hourly.Civil Process : processes and serves legal documents within assigned geographic areas. Applications are valid for six months from submission.Examples of Bailiff DutiesMaintains security by inspecting and securing the courtroom, surrounding hallways and doors, and the judge's chamber before and after court sessions.Maintains order by observing courtroom proceedings to prevent unnecessary disruptions and taking custody of individuals as instructed by the judge.Assists jury panel by giving instructions, answering general questions, preventing unauthorized contact, and escorting to deliberation room.Assists judge and courtroom personnel by reviewing documents, serving legal papers, filing, retrieving, faxing.Responds to medical emergencies as appropriate.Completes required in‑service training.Uses personal protection items with appropriate judgment.Carries personal protection items in approved manner.Performs additional duties as required.Examples of Civil Process DutiesReceives, processes, and documents proper service of legal papers as prescribed by law, using a personal vehicle, to residents and businesses.Performs administrative duties in the office regarding civil process and execution.Serves as bailiff on an as‑needed basis to maintain order.Completes required in‑service training.Uses personal protection items with appropriate judgment.Carries personal protection items in approved manner.Performs additional duties as required.Bailiff QualificationsEquivalent to one year of professional experience in execution of civil and criminal process (law enforcement, investigations, corrections, enforcement, or Deputy Sheriff positions).Bailiff Special RequirementsCurrent CPR (Adult and Child) and AED certification within 90 days of employment.Valid driver's license.Maintain qualifying standards in handgun and TASER within 6 months of hire.Maintain department‑approved personal handgun in good working condition within 30 days of employment.May be required to maintain department‑approved personal TASER in good working condition for work shifts.Civil Process QualificationsEquivalent to one year of professional experience in execution of civil or criminal processes (law enforcement, investigations, corrections, enforcement, or Deputy Sheriff positions).Civil Process Special RequirementsValid driver's license.Use of a personal vehicle required; mileage reimbursed per federal guidelines.Maintain qualifying standards in handgun and TASER within 6 months of hire.Maintain department‑approved personal handgun in good working condition within 30 days of start date.May be required to maintain department‑approved personal TASER in good working condition for work shifts.Selection and AppointmentA selection committee will evaluate qualifications and conduct interviews. Candidates scoring 70 or more qualify for appointment. Selected candidates will complete a Conviction Questionnaire within 3 days. The top five candidates will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority. Conditional merit position offers will include a pre‑appointment urinalysis.
