Working within a team of senior and on‑call preparators and under general supervision, the role requires independent judgment and hands‑on skill in preparing, installing, and caring for museum exhibits and works of art.Essential Functions:Collaborate in a fast‑paced team that creates, installs, and disinstalls 30‑40 exhibitions annually.Confer with preparation, curatorial, registration, and conservation staff in planning and construction of exhibitions, acting as lead preparator when assigned.Design and construct exhibition furniture such as cases, pedestals, mannequins, steel, brass, plexiglass, wooden mounts, partitions, walls and special exhibition effects.Paint gallery walls and furniture; cut and assemble mats and frames for prints, photographs, and drawings.Install, adjust, and remove exhibition lighting fixtures, objects in cases and on walls, and exhibition labels, didactics, and graphics.Care for irreplaceable and valuable objects using manual dexterity and standard museum techniques.Pack, receive, and unpack art objects; re‑house permanent collection artwork and create storage mounts.Maintain and clean assigned shop area; monitor supply and equipment inventory.Restock exhibition brochures throughout the Airport terminals.Operate museum trucks, vans, and cars, forklifts, and pallet jacks.Uphold safety and security, teamwork, mutual respect, open communication, and excellence.Use hand and power tools, brazing and MIG/TIG welding equipment, and various materials such as paint, MDF, plywood, steel, brass, plexiglass, and archival materials.Utilize sketches, drawings, diagrams, written and verbal instructions.QualificationsEducation: Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Art, Fine Arts, Museum Studies or a related field.Experience: Two years of verifiable experience in the preparation, fabrication, installation and care and handling of valuable art objects; making museum mounts; building exhibition furniture; working closely with museum staff at a museum, gallery, or traveling exhibition program.Special Condition: Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Substitution: Additional qualifying full‑time work experience (2000 hours equal one year) may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.Desirable QualificationsExperience working in a fast‑moving and dynamic environment.Equal Opportunity EmployerSFO is proud to be an equal‑opportunity employer committed to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
