May also be tasked with providing a safe learning environment and law enforcement presence in local schools.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInvestigates and prepares reports of complaints and accidentsIssues citations and makes arrestsResponds to crime, accident, and emergency scenes as dispatchedMay supervise others in the absence of the Police SergeantMay train new officersServes subpoenas and warrantsControls traffic and crowdsAppears in courtBooks and transports prisonersTrains school staff, counsels students, and makes presentations on law related programsServes as a liaison between school staff, students, and law enforcementTakes and files fingerprintsPerforms additional duties as assignedQualificationsKnowledge of departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws, regulations, and police literatureAbility to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action giving due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situationAbility to write clear and accurate reportsAbility to learn the use and care of automobile and small firearmsWillingness to complete extensive trainingKnowledge of juvenile and school lawsAbility to learn about proper active shooter response and school crisis planningKnowledge of trends in teenage drug and alcohol abuseAbility to communicate with students, school staff, and the publicAbility to counsel students about a variety of issuesPhysical agilityEducation and ExperienceCompletion of high school or GED required; associate's degree or two years of college-level work in courses related to law enforcementPreferredTwo years of law enforcement experience requiredFamiliarity with Microsoft Office applications is preferredSpecial RequirementsA current Kansas driver's licenseMust be 21 years of ageMust have completed Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training CenterMust complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC certificationMay be required to complete School Resource Officer training from the National Association of School Resource OfficersMust be available to work nights, overtime, in shifts, and weekendsPhysical RequirementsPrimarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is required.
