School Crossing Guard
A school crossing guard is responsible for helping students safely cross roadways as they travel to and from school. Crossing Guards should be able to interact with children and pedestrians in a friendly manner and be able to react quickly to potential dangers thatcan affect children. This is a seasonal, part-time position during the school year.
Responsibilities:
- Direct traffic and pedestrians at designated street crossing locations.
- Ensure the safe passage of students and other pedestrians to and from school or other destinations.
- Stay alert at all times to traffic patterns and potential hazards in the area.
- Assist children in crossing the street safely, by guiding them through traffic with a stop sign, a hand signal, or other means.
- Report any potential safety hazards to the appropriate authorities.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and a friendly attitude while performing job duties.
- Remain attentive to changing weather conditions and take appropriate steps to ensure personal safety and the safety of those crossing the street.
- Maintain awareness of the possible threats to student safety and work to minimize these threats.
- Participate in training and development programs as required.
Requirements:
- No formal education or experience requirements
- Must be able to speak and understand English
- Must be able to communicate effectively and give instructions to others
- Good physical health
- Able to stand for long periods of time
- Has use of both hands and arms
- Good vision and hearing
- Ability to work outdoors in all-weather condition
- Must be reliable and punctual
- Must be available to work any day school is in session
- Subject to police background check
- Must be 18 years or older
Working Conditions:
The job mostly requires standing outside for long periods in varying weather conditions. Sometimes the crossing guards need to respond quickly to unexpected situations involving students and traffic, which might require fast movements and quick thinking.
