Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.
THE DIVISION
Inmate Records is a 24 hour 7 day a week operation which is responsible for booking, tracking and releasing inmates. The Inmate Records unit is responsible for processing approximately 56,000 bookings as well as over 39,000 releases annually.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This recruitment is being held to establish an open Eligible List to fill vacancies in this class until the next recruitment. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower level classifications.
THE POSITION
Sheriff's Records Trainee is the entry level position. Incumbents at this level train under close supervision assisting with more difficult or complex office work related to the booking, tracking, and releasing of inmates.
Sheriff's Records Trainees, who demonstrate progressive proficiency and independence will be promoted to Sheriff Records Technician at or before the end of the 12 month probation period.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
This position staffs a 24 hours 7 days a week operation. Incumbents will be periodically rotated through assignments, shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and correctional facilities.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
For positions with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, candidates must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Sheriff's Department. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation.
Background screening includes completion of a Personal History Form, interview with a background Investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license or official transcripts).
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of a thorough background investigation to the satisfaction of the Sheriff's Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience : Twelve months of office experience
OR
One year experience may be substituted by completion of 18 semester units or 27 quarters units in office practices, business education, or a closely related field from recognized college
OR
Completion of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in office practices, business education, or a closely related field.
Knowledge of :
Modern office practices and procedures, including filling and operating a variety of automated office equipment.
Ability to :
Locate resources such as manuals/material for purposes of interpreting and memorizing penal codes.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Physical Requirements :
Must possess overall, independent body mobility to stand, walk, stoop, bend, twist, and or sit for prolonged periods of time, and walk on regular basis as the work demands; vision sufficient to read fine print and computer screens; arm and manual dexterity sufficient to perform repetitive motion for various duties such as keyboarding, writing, filing, stapling, and using a calculator; ability to reach and grasp above the shoulder level; body strength sufficient to lift, carry files, operate machinery for videotapes and other audio-visual equipment that may weigh up to 40lbs; ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly understandable in person, over the phone, and while addressing large groups of people. Some positions will require the ability to operate tools and equipment, and/or to work while wearing safety equipment.
Environmental Conditions :
Under supervision and monitoring, works inside jail facilities with inmates who have the potential to become verbally abusive or violent. May come in contact with members of the public who become angry or impatient. Regularly uses standard commercial equipment and material including but not limited to computer hardware, software, peripherals, and audiovisual equipment, library materials and equipment. Must be able to withstand pressure involved in meeting deadlines and the need to multitask different priorities and activities.
SELECTION PROCEDURES
Sheriff Human Resources screens all applications to identify the more qualified candidates for the position based on the skills required to meet the needs of the Department. After the initial screening, the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition
Written Exam: (Pass/Fail)
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written exam via email. The written exam consist of job-related, multiple choice questions.
Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedures.
Eligible list:
After all testing procedures have been completed, Sheriff Human Resources will establish an Open Eligible List of qualified candidates.
