Deputy

The Dougherty County Sheriff's Office/Jail Division is hiring on a continuous basis for a Deputy. The purpose of this position is to enforce local, state, and federal laws and to protect the citizens of Dougherty County. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential tasks include performing general law enforcement duties to assigned area such as preparing and serving civil and criminal papers, transporting inmates, planning and directing investigations and interrogations, patrolling assigned area, and serving as bailiff. Other duties involve preparing, serving, and logging civil papers and criminal court papers such as warrants, subpoenas, commitment papers; approving bail bonds, cash bonds and property bonds; transporting inmates and mental health patients to appointed facility; planning and directing investigations of criminal offenses including gathering evidence, conducting interviews of victims and witnesses, interrogating suspects and securing crime scenes; patrolling assigned area for illegal activity; answering dispatched calls and assisting citizens in distress; scanning for vehicle accidents, violations of traffic laws, drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol; redirecting and controlling traffic flow when necessary; working in office answering telephones, dispatching information; conducting computer search of information; writing incident and accident reports; operating patrol car and performing preventative maintenance on vehicle, as appropriate.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, six (6) months of law enforcement experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. For this law enforcement position, applicants must be at least 21 years of age, a United States citizen, high school graduate or equivalent, certified under the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Act, and able to clear background investigation.

Special certifications and licenses may include Georgia POST Peace Officer Certification, Fire Arms Certification, Taser Certification, and must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Proficiency in speaking and interpreting Spanish qualifies for a higher pay rate upon hiring.
