SUMMARY OF POSITION

The County of Monterey Public Health and Consolidated Chemistry Laboratory is seeking to fill a full-time Laboratory Assistant position. Laboratory Assistants perform a variety of routine laboratory procedures including: cleaning, sterilizing, receiving and logging in samples/specimens; entering data into computer software; assisting with laboratory office duties as needed; preparing laboratory media, reagents and solutions; assembling sample/specimen collection kits; preparing samples/specimens for analysis by microbiologists, chemist and water quality analyst; taking inventory of and assisting with ordering laboratory supplies; maintaining laboratory equipment; performing standardized bacteriological, chemical and physical laboratory examinations; preparing animal brains for rabies examination; assisting microbiologists, chemist and water quality analyst with application of quality control standards; communicating with County programs and hospital or laboratory personnel as needed.

This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists in preparation of specimens for examination.
  • Assists in routine bacteriological, chemical, or radiological examination where interpretation of scientific judgment is not required.
  • Prepares culture media, reagents, stains, and sterile solutions.
  • Centrifuges specimens; sets up and dismantles test apparatus.
  • May be assigned to and trained in specialized areas such as tissue preparation and EKG machine operation.
  • Files slides, patient charts, checks in and routes specimens, X-ray charts and performs other clerical duties.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of common laboratory equipment techniques and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of chemical bacteriological and radiological concepts and terminology.


Skill and Ability to:

  • Skill to perform accurate and detailed radiological and clinical laboratory work.
  • Skill to understand and follow precise oral and written direction.
  • Skill to work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work.


Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

  • A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to approximately one year of experience as a Laboratory Helper with Monterey County, and which substantially demonstrates the preceding knowledge and skills.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
