About the Aviation Department

The Kansas City Aviation Department is responsible for managing and operating Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Kansas City Downtown Airport (Wheeler Field - MKC). As an enterprise fund department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, it is fully supported by airport-generated revenues rather than tax funding. The department focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective airport services to airlines, passengers, visitors, and the community. Its operations include overseeing airport administration, maintenance, promotions, and overall system performance while ensuring a high standard of customer service and operational excellence.

What you'll do
• Coordinates all aspects of the Aviation CDL program including road test preparation classes and test scheduling.
• Prepares and assembles clear concise lesson plans, course curriculum, visual and mechanical aids, updates written materials, handbooks, and performs hands-on skill training.
• Trains participants utilizing program syllabus/materials and ensures ability to successfully pass required CDL tests, as well as do pre-trip inspections.
• Trains on Smith System Driving techniques, JJ Keller Entry Level Driver Training, JJ Keller passenger endorsement training and airbrake qualifications.
• Reviews for driving skill set, such as performing turns, backing, shifting, etc.
• Conducts driver performance checks in the field and provides training and initiates counseling or disciplinary action if needed.
• Responsible for managing the development, instruction, administration, and record keeping for the CDL training program.
• Position will have supervisory responsibilities over employees during the training program.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRES
  • High school graduation AND
  • Five (5) years of experience operating heavy equipment or conducting vehicle training courses AND
  • has held a valid Class A or B CDL for five (5) years OR;
  • Accredited associate degree in related field (i.e. Occupation Education/Automotive Technology/Mechanical/Teaching) AND
  • Three (3) years progressively responsible experience operation heavy equipment or conducting heavy vehicle training courses AND
  • held a valid Class A or B CDL for five (5) years
  • Ability to pass a preemployment drug screen, physical examination, and background check as prescribed by the City
  • Ability to pass 10-Year TSA Background Check
  • Must possess a Missouri Class A or B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with tanker or passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions
  • May be required to possess Smith System Certification
  • Preference given to candidates with a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver's License) for two (2) years with Passenger Airbrake Endorsement
