Job SummaryThe Firefighter is responsible for protecting lives and property from fire by performing rescue and fire fighting operations that involve fires, vehicle accidents, and natural disasters.Principal AccountabilitiesPerform search, rescue, and firefighting operations involving fires, accidents, floods, bomb incidents, and spillage of dangerous substancesSafely and efficiently operate emergency response vehicles, equipment, and toolsOperate hand and power tools to ventilate structures, position and climb ladders, pull hoses from truck bed and connect to hydrant and pump apparatus, and operate water charged hose lines of various sizes to combat firesOperate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipmentPerform salvage and overhaul operations to minimize damageParticipate in station drills and emergency procedures trainingRespond to hazardous materials emergencies in accordance with requirementsPerform other duties as assignedKnowledge & SkillsAbility to make sound decisions quickly under stressful conditions and perform duties under hazardous conditions requiring considerable physical exertionAbility to communicate effectively verbally and non-verballyAbility to work effectively with othersAdditional knowledge/skills may be required by contract or assignmentExperience & EducationMinimum one (1) year experience in fire fightingHigh School Diploma or equivalentPrefer Associate's DegreeInternational Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), DOD, or National Pro-Board Certifications as Fire Fighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF – not required for fire departments without an aircraft fire fighting mission)Possess and maintain a current statePreferred possess DoD, ProBoard or IFSAC Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, and Driver Operator MWS.Possess Telecommunicator I and II certificate.Valid driver's licenseAdditional experience/education may be required by contract or assignmentPhysical Requirements/Working EnvironmentCapable of performing all duties of interior structural firefighting (OSHA 1910.156 requirement)Living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortableLong hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditionsPersonnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditionsDisclaimerThe above information on this description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
