About our Department:
The Construction/Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department provides essential services to City of Huntsville residents in a safe, efficient, prompt, and cost-effective manner. We are responsible for maintaining the efficient flow of water throughout the city to prevent flooding, erosion, and other property damage. The Construction Division is staffed with heavy equipment operators, skilled workers, and truck drivers. It demolishes old and vacant buildings and installs new roads and parking areas that include small and large drainage projects.
Public Services Worker Position Overview:
This is manual work requiring considerable physical strength and endurance. Sweeps street, gutters, and alleys; loads dirt from streets into a truck; removes trash from streets and sidewalks by hand. Does pick and shovel work in grading, patching, and maintaining improved and unimproved streets; sweeps, paints, and applies hot mix and seals; excavates streets to grade and loads materials into trucks; spreads gravel, stone, or other construction materials; performs a wide variety of similar tasks in the reconstruction, repair, and maintenance of streets.
Qualifications and Necessary Special Requirements:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency is desired and some experience in performing heavy manual work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid driver's license.
