Weight must be proportionate to height and age.Psychological screening by an accredited psychologist; evaluation of emotional and mental conditions.Vision: 20/100 uncorrected in each eye (corrected to 20/20); no color deficiency or permanent abnormalities.Hearing: No hearing deficiency.Minimum age: 20.5 years by the final filing date; must be 21 years of age upon appointment.Character: Thorough background investigation and fingerprinting required. Reputation for honesty, trustworthiness, and good moral character is mandatory. Felony violations are disqualifying; minor traffic offenses are allowed; misdemeanor offenses may be disqualifying.Background & Pre‑Employment EvaluationThe background evaluation includes a pre‑employment polygraph and psychological assessment and determines overall suitability for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee classification. Candidates found unsatisfactory may reapply after a minimum of twelve months. Unsatisfactory results result in removal from eligibility per Civil Service Rule 608.00.Testing OverviewPhysical Ability Test (PAT) – Conducted by the Human Resources Division. Test components include a 99‑yard obstacle course, body drag, chain link fence, and a 440‑yard distance run. Successful completion of every component is required.Written Examination (PELLETB) – Pass/Fail.
