Duties & Responsibilities
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Office of Legal Affairs is responsible for the provision of legal services to the System and is organized by practice groups that are aligned with the business needs of the corporation. The Office provides legal counsel and representation to the System on a broad range of legal matters, including but not limited to, those pertaining to medical malpractice, medical legal issues, employment and labor law, contracts and transactions, HIPAA and privacy, immigration, affiliate matters, ethics, conflict of interest, corporate governance, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests and other legal issues affecting patients, providers, and employees of the System.
The Special Counsel will provide, on a part-time basis, 1) senior-level legal guidance and strategic advice on complex, high-impact legal matters, and 2) training to attorneys and support staff in the Office of the General Counsel. This role supports the General Counsel by offering subject-matter expertise, independent judgment and project-based legal assistance, without day-to-day operational management responsibilities.
General tasks and responsibilities will include:
Under the direction of the General Counsel, the responsibilities of the Deputy Counsel includes, but are not limited to, the following:
- Project-based support on complex, high-impact legal matters as assigned by the General Counsel
- Advice and guidance to Central Office Real Estate team, as requested (and approved by GC)
- Training, mentoring, coaching to attorneys and, as needed, support staff at the Office of General Counsel, as assigned
- Representation of the System as necessary and assigned by the General Counsel
- All other tasks as assigned by the General Counsel or her delegate
1. Admission and active membership to New York State Bar; and
2. Six (6) years of relevant, responsible legal experience and background in practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
