Responsibilities
Guest Entry & ID Verification
- Monitor the front door and all entry/exit points.
- Check IDs thoroughly and accurately to ensure all guests are of legal drinking age.
- Recognize fake IDs and politely deny entry to underage or otherwise ineligible guests.
- Maintain high awareness of guest behavior throughout the venue.
- Spot signs of intoxication, overservice, drug use, or unsafe conduct.
- Support bartenders and staff in refusing service when appropriate.
- Identify and address inappropriate, disruptive, or aggressive behavior quickly and professionally.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques to calm tense or volatile situations.
- Safely remove individuals who pose a threat to themselves, staff, or other guests.
- Document incidents accurately and immediately per venue procedures.
- Provide first response in emergencies and coordinate with management as needed.
- Serve as a liaison between bar staff, the night auditor, management, and (when required) law enforcement.
- Relay important information to the night auditor regarding guest conduct, incidents, or security concerns.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with police or emergency responders during incidents.
- Perform routine walkthroughs of the property, including restrooms and exterior areas.
- Uphold venue policies and state/local alcohol compliance regulations.
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance at all times.
- Foster a welcoming environment while prioritizing safety and compliance.
- Access Control: Verify that all patrons are of legal age to enter and possess valid identification.
- Order Maintenance: Monitor the behavior of patrons to ensure they adhere to the venue's rules and regulations.
- Conflict Resolution: Handle aggressive, intoxicated, or otherwise disruptive individuals, either by calming the situation or escorting them out of the establishment.
- Safety and Security: Be aware of potential safety hazards, monitor for suspicious activity, and ensure the overall security of the venue.
- Crowd Management: Control the flow of people, prevent overcrowding, and ensure a safe environment for everyone present.
- Communication: Clearly and professionally communicate with patrons, staff, and management.
- Conflict De-escalation: Use de-escalation techniques to resolve tense situations peacefully, making physical confrontation a last resort.
- Situational Awareness: Remain alert and observant, spotting potential problems before they escalate.
- Judgment: Make sound decisions in fast-paced environments, assessing potential risks and taking appropriate action.
- Physical Fitness: Maintain a level of physical fitness to effectively manage and, if necessary, remove unruly individuals.
- Professionalism: Maintain a calm and professional demeanor, even in stressful situations.
- Even-Temperedness: Possess a calm and even temperament, avoiding quick-tempered responses that can worsen a situation.
- Attentiveness: Stay focused and attentive to surroundings to ensure continuous security and safety.
Qualifications
- Prior experience as a bouncer, security guard, or similar role preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm, confident, and respectful under pressure.
- Knowledge of local alcohol service laws and ID verification techniques.
- Physically able to stand for long periods and safely intervene when necessary.
- CPR/First Aid or security certification a plus.
