Major FunctionsThe County of Volusia is seeking Certified Corrections Officers and Corrections Officer Trainees for the Corrections Division. These positions are located in Daytona Beach, Florida and will be responsible for providing custody, control, care, and general welfare of inmates detained in the County Correctional Facilities.Certified Corrections OfficerSalary: $24.67 per hour. Annual minimum pay is $55,001 (does not include overtime or holiday pay).Experience Levels:• 1‑4 years of verified full‑time experience: 2% above the minimum.• 4‑6 years of verified full‑time experience: 4% above the minimum.• 7+ years of verified full‑time experience: 6% above the minimum.Hours: Rotating 12‑hour shifts every six months, including weekends and holidays (6:00 am–6:00 pm / 6:00 pm–6:00 am).Corrections Officer TraineeStarting pay: $21.63 per hour.Hours: Rotating 12‑hour shifts every six months, including weekends and holidays (6:00 am–6:00 pm / 6:00 pm–6:00 am). While attending the Academy, assigned 8‑hour shifts.NOTE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.Illustrative DutiesAdmit and release persons committed to the County correctional facilities.Place inmates under confinement in cells or other jail areas as directed and care for them while confined.Maintain good order and conduct and be responsible for the care, general welfare, and feeding of inmates as assigned.Maintain the area of assigned responsibility in a clean, sanitary, and orderly manner.Assign and direct inmates in such work details as required.Patrol cell blocks.Takes periodic counts of inmates in cell blocks.Exercise reasonable and / or special care or action, as needs dictate, in handling special or unusual inmates or other emergency situations.Check inmates and cell areas for contraband, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, etc.Be held accountable for tools and equipment of the area of responsibility.Responsible for the thorough search and removal of all unauthorized personal articles and contraband from all prisoners to be confined or detained.Perform clerical duties related to the receipt and release of inmates.May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.Attend work on a regular and consistent basis.Adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.Respond to emergency situations.Perform other duties as assigned.Minimum RequirementsAll candidates will be required to undergo an extensive criminal background process.Certified Corrections Officer:• High School Diploma or GED.• Current Corrections Certification issued by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.• U.S. Citizen (per F.S. 943.13).• At least 18 years of age (per F.S. 943.13).• Valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment; maintain thereafter.• Passed the CJ‑BAT.Corrections Officer Trainee:• High School Diploma or GED.• U.S. Citizen (per F.S. 943.13).• At least 18 years of age (per F.S. 943.13).• Valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment; maintain thereafter.• Must have passed the CJ‑BAT or will take the exam within 75 days of invitation to interview.Note on CJ‑BATCJ‑BAT must be taken and passed within 75 days of the candidate's invitation to interview. The exam measures minimum competencies in behavioral attributes, memorization, and written comprehension, expression, and reasoning. The test is 90 minutes long and contains 97 questions.Pre‑Employment and Physical Abilities TestAll candidates must pass a pre‑employment and annual physical abilities test. The test includes activities such as two 220‑yard runs, obstacle jumps, climbing, sprinting, and a lock‑turning task, completed within 6½ minutes.Nicotine StatementIndividuals who fail the nicotine portion of the drug screen but pass all other areas may be eligible for hire and must quit using nicotine products within one year of hire.
