PurposeThe Campus Security Officer reports directly to the Senior Manager of Campus Security and is responsible for protecting life and property while advancing a culture of safety, accountability, and service. This position requires weekend availability and flexibility to work overtime and holidays as operational needs dictate.Shift HoursMonday - Wednesday: 3pm-12am (1-hour unpaid lunch)Saturday / Sunday: 8am-5pm (1-hour unpaid lunch)Essential Duties & Responsibilities(those that must be performed with or without an ADA Accommodation)Serve as the first responder to emergencies; initiate appropriate response protocols and assist students, staff, and guests during evacuations or critical incidents.Conduct proactive foot patrols of all campus facilities; secure buildings, offices, and access points; monitor surveillance systems; and control authorized entry.Enforce institutional policies and applicable laws; deter and address trespassing, vandalism, theft, and other criminal activity.Identify and address unauthorized visitors, escort individuals from campus when necessary.Support student conduct procedures, including the removal of disruptive individuals when required.Coordinate professionally and effectively with law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel.Detain or apprehend individuals who pose a threat to campus safety, consistent with policy and legal authority.Investigate and document all safety and security incidents, accidents, and policy violations.Prepare accurate, detailed, and timely written reports.Provide security coverage for college-sponsored events, including those involving VIP guests and large crowds.Manage access control functions, including ID badge production and daily check-in procedures.Demonstrate calm, controlled, and solution-oriented decision-making in high-pressure situations.Deliver consistent, high-level service that reinforces the institution's commitment to safety and professionalism.Non-Essential Duties & Responsibilities(those that must be performed with or without an ADA Accommodation)Assist with administrative tasks such as filing reports, organizing records, and updating logsProvide general customer service assistance, including giving directions and answering basic campus questionsReport minor facilities issues such as lighting outages, door malfunctions, or safety hazardsProvide non-emergency escort services for students or staff upon requestAssist with traffic or pedestrian flow during peak times or eventsMaintain cleanliness and organization of security workspaces and equipmentOther ResponsibilitiesAttend meetings or briefings as needed to stay aligned with campus operationsAssist other departments with basic operational support when it does not interfere with security dutiesSupport special projects assigned by leadership, such as policy rollouts or process improvementsSupervisory ResponsibilitiesN/ACompetencies | Knowledge | Skills | AbilitiesPrior security experience preferred, ideally within an educational setting.Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.Education | ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent.Prior security experience preferred, ideally within an educational setting.Certificates | Licenses | RegistrationsCalifornia Guard CardBaton Permit (preferred)Chemical Spray Permit (preferred)Computer SkillsProficiency in basic computer systems and report-writing platforms.Ability to monitor CCTV systemsEnvironmental FactorsAbility to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and windExposure to moderate noise levels, including alarms, radios, and active campus environmentsPhysical DemandsExtended periods of standing and walking, including climbing stairs and navigating multiple floorsAbility to operate in confined spaces such as elevators, stairwells, or small officesAbility to lift and carry objects up to 25–50 pounds (equipment, barricades, etc.)Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and reach when conducting inspections or responding to incidentsAbility to respond quickly to emergencies, including moving at a fast pace when necessaryEmotional & Mental DemandsOccasional exposure to stressful or high-pressure situations, including emergencies and confrontational individualsAbility to exercise sound judgment and decision-making under pressureAbility to maintain focus and alertness during long shifts and repetitive tasks.This is not necessarily an all-inclusive list of job-related responsibilities, duties, skills, efforts, requirements or working conditions.
