General Statement of DutiesThe Sheriff's Office is seeking sworn law enforcement officers to join our team. An employee in this class performs a variety of duties in one of the major divisions of the Sheriff's Office, including uniformed patrol, civil, courts, school resource officer, transportation, and criminal investigation.NOTE: Additional incentives are offered for completed higher education, relevant certified work experience, and active-duty military service. APPLY TODAY!Distinguishing FeaturesAfter becoming familiar with the duties, the employee is expected to exercise independent judgment and discretion in varying situations. Considerable tact and firmness are required in dealing with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Work is performed under general supervision and is subject to direct supervision on new and complex assignments. Work is evaluated in conferences, by observation, and through review of records and reports. Schedules vary depending on assignments.Minimum Education and ExperienceGraduation from high school or GED.Completion of NC basic law enforcement training (BLET).Meet the standards set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Standards and Training Division.Successfully pass a rigorous background process, including criminal records check, polygraph exam, psychological/medical screening, pre-employment physical fitness testing, and standardized reading comprehension test.Possess a valid driver's license.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPatrol an assigned area of the County, answer complaints and requests for assistance, investigate crimes and disturbances, interview witnesses, question suspects, gather and preserve evidence, make arrests, and testify in court.Serve various types of civil papers; explain briefly the meaning of papers being served; conduct sale of personal and real property at public auction; ensure proper amount of money is collected.Maintain safety and security for students, staff, and administration to ensure the learning environment within the school system.Open and close courts at designated times; maintain order in the courtroom; assist defendants in completing affidavits; swear defendants in; seat jury in place when selected; escort trial jury to the jury room when directed by a judge; assist and escort grand jury.Prepare papers for and assist in the transportation of prisoners; escort prisoners to court and maintain custody there; escort defendants to the clerk's office to pay fines; prepare the necessary papers for defendants ordered into custody by the courts, obtain release orders, search prisoners and log property, record arrests.Cooperate with law enforcement personnel of other governmental agencies in making investigations and arrests.Transport prisoners, mental patients, and intoxicated persons to institutions for confinement or treatment; provide transportation in certain emergencies.Provide protective escort; maintain order at public gatherings.Operate speed detection devices or breath analyzer.Prepare and maintain daily reports concerning criminal activity; prepare related reports as requested.Assist in the preparation of crime prevention programs; develop contacts among local community organizations and businesses; conduct seminars.Perform related work as needed.#J-18808-Ljbffr
