Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant IIUnder the emergency order, qualified applicants may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with the possibility of permanent County employment upon successful completion of an assessment.Role OverviewThe Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking highly qualified individuals to perform professional fire protection engineering work. Incumbents will conduct plan checks of technically complex structures, review construction plans for compliance with fire codes, and provide technical supervision to junior staff.Essential Job FunctionsConduct plan checks of complex building plans (occupancies A, B, E, F, H, I, R, S and specialty projects such as high‑rise, high‑pile combustible storage, and hazardous materials).Review construction plans, identify discrepancies, provide recommendations, and manage plan resubmittals for compliance.Determine access and required fire flow and hydrant requirements during the entitlement process.Provide technical supervision to lower‑level fire prevention engineering staff, including training on preliminary plan checks.Perform calculations for building area justification, fire flow, hydrant locations, and on‑site fire protection systems (sprinklers, special extinguishing systems). Conduct hydraulic calculations for trees, loops, and complex grids.Evaluate requests for alternative compliance to fire codes, provide analyses, and coordinate with county, city, and public agencies at meetings.Occasionally carry heavy equipment over rough terrain during inspections.Minimum RequirementsTraining and Experience :Option I: Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer.Option II: Graduation from an accredited college with a specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection administration, or fire technology, plus one year's experience performing fire protection engineering work.Option III: Five years' experience performing fire protection engineering work.Option IV: Two years' experience at the level of Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I.A valid California Class C driver's license, or an alternative transportation arrangement.Physical ability to stand or walk most of the time, work on irregular surfaces, and lift weights up to 25 pounds, with frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.Out‑of‑class experience is not accepted.Equal Employment OpportunityThe County of Los Angeles is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and is committed to non‑discrimination in the County workforce.
