The Position The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women interested in continuing an exciting and challenging career in law enforcement. Employees in this class perform routine law enforcement, crime prevention and detection, and detention activities. No prior law‑enforcement experience is required for entrance; incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications outlined below.The Office of the Sheriff operates the most innovative detention facilities in the country, provides patrol services throughout the county including four contract cities, and offers a range of specialized assignments. As a department of over 1,000 employees, with 668 sworn, the Office continues to grow and offers excellent career development opportunities for deputies.Typical Tasks Patrol assigned areas to protect life and propertyEnforce county ordinances and assist local peace officersInvestigate accidents and administer first aidConduct preliminary investigations of burglary, theft, rape and other criminal violationsClassify criminal complaints and forward to investigatorsSet up and maintain road blocks, conduct stakeouts, make raids and perform other special duties as directedApprehend and transport suspectsConduct prisoners to and from court and guard them while in courtTransport prisoners to and from the Rehabilitation CenterReceive and investigate complaints of violations by or against juvenilesConfere with juveniles and their parentsPrepare citations for Juvenile CourtSearch for, photograph, collect, preserve and transport physical evidenceEvaluate and compare latent fingerprintsReceive, search, book, fingerprint and guard prisoners in the jail, hospital, prison wards and at the Rehabilitation CenterSupervise prisoners at work, in transport, during visit conferences and other activitiesPrepare for court visits of attorneys and for the transfer and release of prisonersServe legal papers such as subpoenas, summons, complaints and writs of attachment, execution and restitutionAssist in conducting sales of attached propertyCollect fees due to the CountyServe warrants and make arrestsMaintain order in court and prepare, process and maintain necessary files, documents and reportsMinimum Qualifications License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out‑of‑state valid license accepted during application.Education: Possession of a U.S. high school diploma, GED, California high‑school proficiency certificate, or a two‑year, four‑year or advanced degree from an accredited college or university. School must meet specified criteria.Training: Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate and experience in law enforcement within the past three years, or completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency Examination within the last three years, or valid certificate from a California P.O.S.T. approved Basic Academy. Academy certificates valid for three years unless extended.Firearms: Continued eligibility to possess, use, and carry firearms. Ability to meet and maintain department firearms qualifications standards. Free of any disqualifying factors.Citizenship: Must be authorized to legally work in the United States under Federal Law.Age: Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.Physical Requirements Ability to meet health standards prescribed by the County Medical Consultant.Hearing: Must not have hearing loss >25 decibels in 500, 1000, 2000 Hz.Visual Acuity: 20/20 uncorrected each eye; corrected to 20/30 each eye.Background All applicants will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination, medical examination, and psychological testing, according to the specifications of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Inquiries into hate group membership or participation, or public expressions of hate, as defined by the relevant statutes, will be made. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other, of any offense that would have been a felony if committed in this state, or discharged from the military for an offense adjudicated by a military tribunal that would have been a felony. Disqualifying factors include Cal. Gov. Code 1029 and Cal. Pen. Code 13510.8; applicants engaged in serious misconduct are ineligible to be employed as a peace officer in California.Other Requirements Employment that requires operating a motor vehicle is subject to county drug and alcohol testing under the County Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.Selection Process Applicants must submit an online application at www.cccounty.us/hr. Oral interview conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board evaluating candidates in job‑related areas (weighted 100%). The Human Resources Department may modify examination steps in line with personnel regulations.Conviction History Applicants will be fingerprinted and fingerprints sent to the California DOJ and FBI. The resulting conviction history report will be used to determine if any conflict exists with the duties of the job. If a conflict exists, evidence of rehabilitation may be presented; a conviction does not automatically preclude employment. If a conditional job offer is accepted, the HR department will contact the applicant to schedule fingerprinting.Disaster Service Worker All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers by state and local law.
