Position Summary

The School Crossing Guard assists and safeguards school children as they cross city streets before and after school. The position involves directing and controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated crossings to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Guide or control vehicular and pedestrian traffic at streets, schools, or crossings.
  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps for pedestrians to cross.
  • Stop vehicles using portable stop signs and lead children safely across the street.
  • Supervise student safety patrols, when present.
  • Report unsafe driving behaviors or traffic violations to authorities.
  • Attend safety training sessions as required.
  • Monitor and regulate the access and flow of people to prevent congestion or unsafe conditions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of city traffic laws and pedestrian safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with children, parents, and motorists.
  • Good observation and situational awareness.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Physical ability to stand outdoors for extended periods and work in all weather conditions.
Qualifications:Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Physically capable of lifting and holding a stop sign.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  • Ability to work courteously with the public, especially children and school personnel.
  • Subject to background check.
